Fuck! It’s Finch. I shake my head and stare at the option to decline the call but hit the green button. “What the fuck, Finch? You gotta stop calling me. I can’t help you.”

“Is that any way to greet an old friend?”

I recognize the slur in his voice. “What do you want?”

“Just wanted to reach out. See how my buddy Slick Lix is doing. I heard you beat the Hyper King in the ring last month.”

“I’m not giving you any money, Finch.”

“I wasn’t calling for—”

“Deal with your shit. Get it together. Get off the drugs. And for fuck’s sake, make amends with your demons.”

“Fuck. I can’t.” His tone changes to the one he used when we were younger. It’d get me every time.

He was found in a motel room at the age of five. His junkie mother lay on the bed. She died four days earlier from an overdose. That’s how he got into the system.I felt bad for the kid, but he’s no longer a kid. None of us are.

“You know how hard it is, dude. You’ve got your own demons.”

“Finch, I invited my demons in with open arms. You accidentally stumbled into their den. There’s a difference. You can walk away, and you know what you gotta do to get that done. Stop calling me. I can’t help you.”

“Come on—”

I end the call before he finishes.

Motherfucker. Whenever he calls, it brings back memories—ones I want to leave behind me.

My cell rings again. I go to toss it on the passenger seat but catch the name. Willa.

I swipe. “Hello?”

“Hi, Felix. Are you busy?”

“No. What’s up? You got an escort?” It appears Brett hasn’t gotten to Willa yet about taking me out of the escort rotation.

Willa runs the Domestic Abuse Center. She calls when a woman may be in danger but is reluctant to reach out to the police. We head over to where the woman is and get her to Willa. Willa takes over from there, getting the abused woman somewhere safe.

“Yes. But it’s a little different from what we’re used to. I thought I’d reach out to you first with it.”

“I’m available. Just send me the info and address—”

“I don’t have an address.” She cuts me off. “I’m going to give you the woman’s number. Could you call her?”

This is definitely different. We don’t call the Julias. Willa takes care of all of that. “Sure. Text it to me.”

“Great, I’m sending it now. Let me know how everything turns out.”

“You’re not going to meet me after I do the escort?”

“No. Just call Dana and tell her Jane gave you her number. She’ll explain everything to you.”

“Yeah. Okay.” Definitely different.

“Thanks,” Willa says and hangs up.

My cell dings. I click on the number in the text.

“Hello?”
