His smile dances in his eyes. “Do you like to cook?”

“I’m not good at it.” I take a swig of my water. “I can make a mean peanut butter and jelly sandwich and heat the oven for a frozen pizza, but I never took the time to learn how to cook, not like my mom does.”

He sets his fork down. “Do you have any siblings?”

“No. It was just me and my mom and my uncle. My mom’s brother. He was like a father to me. We lived with him for a few years after my father left. My uncle opened the world to me. He took me to the library, museums, and camping. He taught me how to row a boat and catch fish. He was more like a father to me than my real father.”

There’s a knock on the door.

I blink.

There’s another knock.

“Excuse me.” He gets up and walks to the door.

I rush over and grab my purse, thankful for the interruption. I need to get out of here. Talking about my uncle to the man who may have had something to do with his death, it’s all kinds of upside down.

“Hey, Harper,” Lix says as an attractive woman with dark hair pushes her way inside.

“Lix, I—” She pauses when her eyes meet mine long enough for me to notice their beautiful amber color. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know you had company.”

“It’s okay.” I wave my hand. “I was just leaving.”

“No.” She sets her hand on Lix’s shoulder as if comfortable being there. “I can come back later.”

“It’s all good, Harper,” Lix says, recognizing my need for escape. “Ms. Ashley, as she said, was just leaving.”

I nod and head for the door, thankful he’s not trying to convince me to stay.

Turning to the left to exit the building, Lix grabs my arm.

“Chosen,” he says, hauling me back to him. “She’s my brother’s girlfriend.”

“I don’t care who she is,” I snap, jerking my arm from his hand.

His grip tightens. He yanks my body against his. “The way I see it, you don’t know what you want.”

“Your story.” I gaze up into his crystal-like, hypnotizing eyes. “That’s it.”

“I think there’s more to it than that. So why hold back? You don’t strike me as a girl afraid to go after what she wants.”

“I’m not a girl. I’m a woman.”

“Yes.” A smooth smile slithers over his lips. His hooded survey lowers to my mouth. “You do keep reminding me of that.” The heat of his blue eyes slithers like his smile back to my view.

I hate what he does to my body whenever he’s near. “I’ll see you later, Lix.”

“I’ll be looking forward to it.” He laughs, releasing me from his grip.

Chapter 10

It’s been a few days, and I haven’t seen Chosen Ashley lurking in my rearview mirror. The time I’ve invested in thinking about the woman has me staggered.

I’m not one to stress over some girl. Or woman. Granted, I was a late bloomer. In my teenage years, I was too busy concentrating on surviving. I didn’t have time to worry about the opposite sex. I lost my virginity at nineteen to some chick I met at a bar. She was a few years older than me, experienced, and likely wasn’t expecting the three-minute fuck I gave her.

After that, I hit the books.

At twenty-one, I finally got my own place and put my readings to play.
