My fight wanes, and my body slackens under his stronghold, understanding the point he’s attempting to make.

“And tonight, she finally had the strength to ask for help. It’s not easy for them. Some never ask, and sometimes they end up dead. But Nora reached out. Like most of them, she was too afraid to call the police. But she asked for help.”

“I’m sorry,” I whisper. “I shouldn’t have interfered.”

His lip curls. “Why did you?”

“Please let me go.”

His hands tighten around my wrists. “You can’t even tolerate being trapped for a few seconds.”

“Lix!” I struggle to break free.

“I could hold you here for as long as I want. I could beat you. I could take you into your bedroom and rape you. All because I’m stronger than you.”

“Is that what you’re going to do? Hit me? Rape me?” I tremble everywhere, deep inside, knowing this man would never hurt me or any woman. “I got it. Point taken!”

“Nora needed help. I helped her. What happened tonight is not a story, Chosen. It’s someone’s life. I don’t know what you’re after or what you want, but leave Nora out of it.” He releases me, taking a swift step away.

I rub the impression of his strength on my wrists, unable to make the powerful feeling go away. “What’s going to happen to her?”

He glances at me, hesitance lurking in his piercing blue eyes.

“Jane will get her out of here and set her up somewhere safe. The rest is up to Nora.” He looks at me for a few seconds. “I’m going to be right out there.” He points outside. “So don’t get any ideas about going after the story.”

“I don’t plan on it. So you don’t have to sit in your truck all night.”

“It’s either out there or in here.” He glares at me. “And with the mood I’m in tonight, you don’t want me in here.”

“You’re not welcome here.”

He steps closer to me. “How you weren’t welcomed earlier?”

I raise my chin. “I apologize for that.”

“Yeah, well, I could stay in here and apologize for it later.” He bends down, meeting me at eye level. “Is that what you want?”

Trembling with fear and something else I’ve been fighting since I met the man, I move back. “Please leave,” I say, pointing at the door and holding my breath until he walks out.

Chapter 12

“I followed Lix last night on an escort.”

Selina’s eyes flash to me. “What happened—No. Wait.” Her hands lift. “Don’t tell me anything.” She turns to the coffee pot.

“I won’t.” I shake my head. “All I’ll say is that it was dangerous, crazy, and heartbreaking. The poor woman—”

“That’s enough!” Selina cuts me off again with a backhanded wave. “You shouldn’t have followed him. It was dangerous and crazy.” She turns around with her coffee. “What if something happened to you? When I first saw Lix, I told you he was in the hospital with a knife wound. And then there was the dead guy and the shooter at the domestic center. Trouble follows those Daxon brothers. And what if things had turned south last night? Chosen, don’t do it again. You have to promise me.” She lowers into the chair.

“Oh, I won’t. I have no right to interfere with what they’re doing. I learned my lesson.”

She pulls the mug from her mouth. “But you’re okay?”

“Yeah. Lix was impressive. I mean, you should’ve seen the way he—”

“No more!” She starts waving her hand.

“Sorry.”I guess this is something else I can’t share with Selina, like my cockeyed attraction toward the man. I’m upset that I can’t share any of it with her. I need someone to talk to.
