“I’m just concerned about—”

“Brett,” I finish for her. That’s what this inquisition is all about. It must be. I’m overthinking it. “Listen, if you’re asking if I think Chosen will ruin us or print anything about any of us, I honestly don’t think she will. Whatever she’s after has to do with me, not Brett or Cole.”

“And you never met her before this?”

I shake my head.

“She just showed up one day?”

“Yes, that’s what happened. Poof. And there she fucking was.” I chuckle. It’s insane how it all happened. And since she poofed before me, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about her.

“And you don’t find that strange?”

“Sure I do. But to find out what she’s after, I can’t evade her. So the closer I let her get to me, the closer I am to discovering the truth.”

“You’re not afraid to discover what that may be?”

“I’ve done some fucked-up things in my life, but if it has to do with them, it’s my fuckup to deal with. And I will deal with it. So no, I’m not worried about it.”

“But you’re afraid you might be falling for her?”

I chuckle, stifling the honest answer deep in my throat. “Cassie, like everything else, I’ll deal with it.”

“Okay.” She smiles. “Well, I’m here for you, Lix. And for what it’s worth, I think it’s good you’re leaving the door open for her.”

“Thanks,” I say, walking her to the door. As far as any entry goes, I don’t think a closed one would keep Chosen out.

My cell rings. I shut the door and dig it out of my pocket. It’s Mom. She rarely ever calls. I swipe green to answer.

“Hello?”

“Hello, are you willing to accept a collect call from Maria Daxon at the Parish Women’s Correctional facility?”

“Yes. I will.”

“Felix?”

“Hi, Mom.” I sit up on the sofa. “Is everything okay?”

“I don’t know, honey. I had a visit today from a Luna Moon. She said she’s aSun Bulletinreporter and knows you.”

Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Heated anger flushes through me. Why the hell did Chosen go to see Mom? That fucking woman! This is a game-changer.

“What did she want?” Yeah, it’s the fucking million-dollar question.

“She told me about the escort service. Is it true, Felix?”

I’m going to kill Chosen Ashley. “Mom, don’t listen to what she says.”

“Felix, is it true? Are you boys really doing what she said? Helping battered women?”

“Mom —”

“Felix, if youmomme one more time, I swear—” She sighs, realizing she can’t do anything from where she’s at. It sucks. I wish she could do anything other than live in that hellhole. “It’s dangerous what you’re doing. One of you could get hurt. If anything ever happened to one of you boys…” She pauses. “This is my fault.”

“No, Mom. It’s not. It’s just…Mom, we do it because we want to. We do it because we can. We’re prepared for any situation because of Brett’s history with wrestling, Cole’s martial arts training, and my fighting background. We’re safe about it. You don’t need to worry. These women need us.”

“Let the police handle it.”
