“Okay, honey. I’ll wait to tell your brothers, but I’m not staying quiet for long.”

“Thanks, Mom. Love you.”

“Love you,” she says before the line goes dead.

Chapter 14

I unlock my apartment door and flick on the light.

Lix sits on my sofa with his hands folded together. He appears calm, but the dim light on the end table illuminates the chill in his frigid-blue eyes.

“What are you doing here?” I know the answer.

I anticipated a reaction from my visit with his mother but didn’t expect that his response would be breaking into my home. Then again, I shouldn’t put anything past this man.

“You’ve made this little game we’re playing”—the muscles in his forearms flex as his hands clench tighter, and his jawline darkens—“personal.”

“I want you to leave.” I point at the door.

“Is that what you want?” He slowly stands.

“Yes.” Not looking away, I blindly search for my cell in my purse.

“What are you going to do?” He takes a step toward me. “Call the police?”

“Yes.” Not really, but I’ll call Selina, and she’s technically the police. So I hold my cell up as if it’s a threat against him.

His lips tug into a cocky grin. “Go ahead then. Call.”

Shit. He’s calling my bluff. “What do you want?”

“Me?” His eyebrow lifts, heightening his cocky grin. “I’m not the one who’s following you.” He takes a step closer. “I’m not the one invading your life.” He pushes my door closed. “The only question that needs to be asked here.” He plucks my cell from my hand. “And answered…” He pauses to remove my purse from my shoulder. He sets both on the table beside the door.

I watch, unwilling to stop him. Frozen by his demand. The one he has over me whenever he’s near.

He positions his body a foot away. Measurement is always essential when it comes to the man. “Is what do you want from me?”

“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have—”

“Chosen,” he says, cutting me short with his deep, husky tone. “I don’t give a fuck what you’re sorry for, and I’m sick of fucking hearing it.”

He stares at me, nostrils flaring as his hooded eyes bear down on me.

It’s quiet. Too quiet. I hear my breaths. Hear my heartbeat thrashing against my chest, ringing in my ears.

My breasts get heavy. My mouth goes dry.

The refrigerator kicks on.

I suck in some air.

My reaction is justified. I should be frightened. I’ve crossed a line with him, and he’s pissed. I’ve pushed him too far this time. He wants answers, yet right now, in my twisted head, all I want is him.

How did this happen?

Why am I so attracted to him?

No. It’s not an attraction. None as I’ve ever experienced before. I can’t identify it. There’s no finger to put on it. It’s insane!
