“You can.” I stare back, trapping the guilt deep in my gut. This is what I’ve been after, his trust. He just offered it up to me. So why do I feel so shitty?

“We’ll see about that. Won’t we?” He pulls his arm from my hold and walks out the door.

Chapter 15

I walk into my flat and toss my keys on the counter.

Fuck! This woman.

I rush a hand through my hair and get a whiff of her perfume on my skin. I sniff my arm. Damn, everything about her adheres to me.

I want her so bad.

But I need to find out what she’s after.

Why she went to visit Mom?

Yeah, the only question answered tonight was the one that left me with a thriving, unattended hard-on. She wants me, and she’s pissed about it.

I get it.

I want to hurt the abusers when I see them. I get pissed about it. It isn’t good. But I still want it.

When she looks at me, I sense I’m her nemesis. Her inescapable downfall.

That’s how she regards me. Whatever she came looking for, her attraction to me wasn’t supposed to be a part of the deal.

Now she has to fight it.

And, after tonight’s encounter, it’s not going away. We’ve got chemistry. The type that doesn’t come along every day. It’s fierce. Hot. And rare.

But she’s not getting anything more from me.

Not until I uncover the truth.

There’s a knock on the door. It swings open.

Cassie and Harper walk in.

“Lix,” Cassie says.

Harper finishes. “What the hell is going on?”

Mentally caught with my hand in Chosen’s cookie jar, I throw out my arms. “What now?”

“Why did that reporter—”

“Chosen.” I interrupt Harper.

Her face scrunches at my amendment. “She visited your mom at the jail.”

I rest back against the counter and nod. “I know.”

“Your mom called Brett.” Cassie’s eyebrows rise. “He and Cole are on their way here.”

I grin, sensing Cassie’s anxiety for me. “Thanks for the heads-up.”

“Heads-up!” Harper slaps me on the arm. “What’s going on?”
