“He was under orders to bring you in,” Jak said. “My uncle wanted to sell you off at auction to send Edon a clear message.”

“Yeah and selling me off as a sex slave would have been so much better than death,” she said. “Either way, I’m not sorry that asshole’s dead. I was going to let him live after I shot him in the knee, but he told me that he’d find me and end me. I don’t take threats lightly,” she said. “If I let him live, I’d have him on my ass too. I eliminated a threat, and now, I have one less Tirana coming for me.”

“Two less,” Jak whispered. “I’m not coming for you either, Rovena. I want to help you.”

“Why would you do that, Jak?” she asked. “As you have already pointed out, I’ve ignored you for the past ten years. Why help me and put yourself at risk?” she asked.

“You know why, Rovena,” he said, “don’t pretend that you don’t. My feelings for you haven’t changed in the past ten years.”

“I see,” she whispered. Rovena sat quietly in the seat next to him as he pulled into her place.

“Stay put,” he ordered. “There’s a gun in the glove box. I won’t ask if you know how to use it. I’m going to run in and check everything out. If someone’s here, I’ll try to get rid of them, but if I can’t, you take my car and get to the jet that Edon has waiting at his personal hangar. Got it?” he asked.

“Yes,” she breathed. “And Jak,”

“Yeah?” he asked, turning back to her.

“Be careful,” she ordered.
