“She’s not in this, Chains,” Myles insisted. “Just let her go.” He knew that no matter what happened to him, Gen would be safe and find happiness with Gavin. They’d at least have each other and that was all that mattered to him at the moment.

“Oh, I think I’ll keep her around for a bit. I’m betting that you’ll be a bit chattier if I have her here.” He was right, Myles would do just about anything to keep Gen safe, including spilling the details about Spider’s plan to take down the Ghosts. He told Savage from the start that he wasn’t going to go undercover, and he meant it. This wasn’t his war, even though he saw the destruction that the Ghosts caused in those poor women’s lives, he wasn’t going to lose his woman in the wake of that destruction.

“I’ll tell you whatever you want to know, just let her go,” Myles bargained.

“Not going to happen,” Chains drawled. “Will anyone else be joining us today or are you two it?” he asked. There was no way that Myles would tell him that Gavin lived with them there too. The less information Chains had about his life, the better off Gavin and Genesis would be if something happened to him.

“It’s just us here,” Myles lied. “Listen, this is all just a misunderstanding. I’m sure that if you and I go back down to the warehouse to talk to Spider, he’ll be able to clear all this up for you.” He was grasping at straws, but that was all he had. There was no way that he’d let Chains hurt Gen but getting her out of there was going to be a problem. If he could get Chains to leave with him, Gen would be able to go for help.

“I’ve already talked with Spider. He and I didn’t see eye to eye, so I took care of him,” Chains growled. Gen’s gasp filled the room as Myles tucked her behind his body again. Chains laughed, “Don’t worry, honey,” he said. “I haven’t killed him—yet. I need to know who he’s working for, so I know what I’m up against. I was hoping that you’d be able to help me out with that, Legend.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Myles lied. “Spider works for you, man.”

“I used to think that too until I overheard your conversation this morning. I thought that you worked for me, but then I heard you tell Spider that you had to go back to your real job and to get someone else to help him with his case. I’m guessing that I’m the case and that he works for some agency. How about you fill in the rest of the blanks for me, and I let your pretty girl here go?” Chains asked. Myles was beginning to believe that Chains had no intention of letting Gen go.

“Or you can drop your fucking gun and we can talk like civilized men,” Spider said from behind Chains. “Making promises that you don’t intend to keep is a shitty move, man,” Spider taunted. “Now, turn around real slow and drop your gun on the porch.” Chains didn’t look like he was about to follow any order that Spider gave him. When he smiled at Myles and winked, he knew that things were about to get ugly.

He turned and pushed Genesis to the ground, shouting for her to get down as the shot rang out in a deafening tone. He thought for sure that Chains had hit one of them, but when he checked them both out, neither of them was bleeding. Instead, Chains was laying on the floor next to them, gurgling on his own blood as he gasped for air. Spider had shot him in the back before Chains could even get a shot off.

“You’re dead,” Chains coughed, breathing his last breath as he stared down Spider.

“Not today, fucker,” Spider spat, “but, you are. You two okay?” he asked.

“I think so,” Myles said. “You good, Gen?”

“No,” she whispered, “but, I will be. Is he really dead?” she asked.

“He’s dead,” Spider said, helping them both up from the floor. “I’m sorry to mess up your house this way. Listen, you two go to work and I’ll take care of this,” he said, nodding at Spider’s body.

“Is that your way of telling us to get lost?” Myles asked.

Spider shrugged, “Yeah, but I was trying to be nice about it. Honestly, I need to keep this hush-hush and if the local authorities are called in, it will blow my cover. I’m going to have to call in a few of my agents to have this cleaned up on the down low.”

“Understood,” Myles said. “Gen and I will keep this to ourselves. But we can’t promise that any of the nosey neighbors didn’t see something. You want us to run some interference with them?”

“If you don’t mind, that would be great. I’ll have everything cleaned up before you get home,” Spider said.

“Thanks, we appreciate that,” Myles said. “You ready?” he asked, holding his hand out to Genesis. She looked at him as though he had lost his mind, and maybe he had. She wasn’t used to his world, and that had him worried.

“No,” she breathed, “but, what choice do I have?” He wanted to tell her that she had choices—the first being to walk away from his crazy life and not look back, but he didn’t want to give her any ideas.

“Let’s go, honey,” he said, “we can find Gavin and I’ll have him keep an eye on you while I meet with my CO. I don’t want you to be alone.”

“Okay,” she whispered. He handed Spider his house key and told him to leave it down at Savage Hell when he was done with the cleanup. Myles had a feeling that they would need to make a stop there for a few beers on the way home—they’d need them after the morning they had just had.

Myles walked into Savage Hell with Gen and Gavin flanking his sides. He found Savage behind the bar and the three of them sat down. “You guys are in here early tonight,” he said.

“We need to talk,” Myles said.

“About?” Savage asked.

“I’m off the case with Spider. I got called back to work this morning,” he started.

“I understand,” Savage said.

“There’s more,” Gavin interrupted.
