Evan poured juice into the flutes. “My date?”

“The one you needed my rope for.”

“Oh.” Remembering, Evan grinned. “It was great.”

“You get any jizz on my hemp?”

Amused, Evan carried the orange juice to the fridge. “No, but it was close.”

“I’ll bet. You bring it with you?”

“I was hoping to hang onto it for a few more days if you don’t mind.” Evan grinned. “It’s my turn to get tied up.”

Spence barked out a laugh. “I guess that answers my question.”

Bottle of Cava in hand, Evan glanced up. “What question?”

“If you guys were okay,” Spence said, his dark eyes on Evan’s over his coffee cup. “Colin seemed…awkward.”

Evan concentrated on getting the cork out of the bottle, and when it finally popped free, on getting the fizzing wine into the glasses instead of on the floor. When the glasses were full and the bottle tucked away in the fridge, he said, “I think he’s having trouble finding his footing.”

“It’s a big change for you guys.”

“Plus, he’s shy,” Evan went on, unsure if he was convincing Spence or himself. “Private, you know? So he’s a little uncomfortable with people knowing we’re…”

“Fucking?” Spence suggested.

“Together,” Evan decided. “Because it’s a big change.”

“Sure.”

“He just needs some time to get used to it, I think,” Evan went on. “It happened pretty fast.”

Spence’s eyes met Evan’s. “Fifteen years is fast?”

“You know what I mean. It’s only been three weeks since Thanksgiving.”

“I wondered if that had been the trigger,” Spence said, amused. “Score one for Esme.”

Evan frowned. “Huh?”

The amusement morphed into a full-blown laugh. “You think it was just a lucky break she pulled you and Colin to tag team her? Foolish boy.”

Evan blinked. “She set us up?”

“Like bowling pins.” Spence grinned into his coffee cup. “And down you went.”

Evan shook his head. “Son of a bitch.”

“Not only did she set you up, but she did it at an orgy.” Spence shook his head in admiration. “You gotta respect that kind of savvy.”

What a story it’ll be to tell our grandchildren, Evan wanted to say. But he didn’t dare. “Do you think Colin knows?”

Spence shrugged. “Does it matter?”

“I guess not.” Forcing the spurt of anxiety back into the pit of his stomach, he reached for a tray for the drinks.

“Would he be offended?”
