Brooke and David approached them.

Cody finished a conversation about some upcoming contract with a business partner. “We’ll talk more about this on Monday.”

Trevor nodded. “Sounds good.” He turned to Summer. “Really good to meet you. I’m anxious to check out that Sutherland Industries subsidiary you told me about and see if we can do business.”

“If you have any questions, you can get my business information through Cody and give me a call.” She nodded her good-bye to the man and sighed.

“You sound like you’re ready to go.” Cody squeezed her hip.

Brooke stepped closer to them. “Hey, you two, we’re headed over to the hotel bar for a nightcap. Want to join?”

Cody shook his head. “Sorry. We have our own plans tonight.”

David didn’t look at all disappointed that Cody had declined the invitation.

Brooke glanced at their table in the distance where Nate and Miranda stood, talking to another couple. Haley and Natalie sat at the table, empty dessert plates in front of them. Both girls looked bored out of their minds.

Natalie stared back at Summer, then her gaze went to and stayed on Cody as usual.

Brooke turned back to Cody. “David offered to drive me home after drinks, so I’ll let Nate know they can go on without me. Want me to say good-bye for you two?”

“Yes. That’d be great. Maybe I can sneak out of here with Summer before anyone else stops us.”

David smiled at her. “It was really good to see you again. Even better to see this one”—he cocked his head toward Cody—“attached to you, smiling and having a good time.”

Cody shook David’s hand. “See she gets home safe. We’ll catch up again soon.”

David nodded. “Sounds good.”

Cody took her hand. They walked out at an angle from the Weston table toward the ballroom doors.

Summer caught Natalie and Haley’s stares as they went. She gave them a wave.

Haley waved back. Natalie turned away.

Summer hated that her relationship with Cody upset Natalie, but she wanted to be alone with him as much as he seemed to want to be with her. He walked her through the hotel lobby likethey were on the march to be first in line for his favorite rock band concert and he wanted to be in the front row.

The valet stopped Cody’s car in front of them. Cody opened the passenger door for her, but before she got in, he turned her to him. “Last chance. Where am I taking you?”

She answered with the only place she wanted to be with him right now. “To bed.”

The intensity in his eyes changed to a smoldering heat and conveyed a promise of what was to come. “That’s what I wanted to hear.”

“With you is where I always want to be.”

Chapter Thirty-Six

Natalie leaned to the side in the back seat and stared out the car’s windshield as they pulled into the driveway and Dad opened the garage. “Cody’s car isn’t here.”

“Maybe they stayed to have drinks with Brooke and David,” Haley said.

Natalie didn’t think so. “They left before Brooke told us David would bring her home later.”

Her mom and dad turned to each other and shared a look before her dad said, “I’m sure you’ll see them in the morning.”

Everyone got out of the car and went into the house.

The clock on her phone read ten twenty-two. No one bothered to turn on lights downstairs as they went up to get ready for bed.
