He cupped her cheek. “You have a place here no matter what.”

She leaned into his touch. “I wish it felt as permanent as you make it sound.”

“It is.”

The disbelief in her eyes contradicted him.

He shifted and grabbed the open bottle of wine. He pulled out the cork, poured them each a glass, and handed her one. “Let’s have a picnic and talk.”

“I don’t want to talk about it anymore.”

“Good. Because I don’t, either.” He slipped his hand beneath her leg and gave it a gentle pull. “Sit down here with me.”

She slid off the chair and joined him on the soft rug, the warmth of the fire spreading to them and through the room. He set the tray between them.

She pulled off her shoes and set them aside.

He picked up a cracker, stacked a piece of cheese and summer sausage on top, and handed it to her. “How was your day, dear?”

That got him a soft grin. “Terrible. My flight this morning was delayed by half an hour. It was raining when I landed. My grandfather was not pleased I arrived late for the meeting, though he was impressed with my questions about the acquisition and insights on why we weren’t going to pay more than the company was worth. Since I was in town, my mother insisted we get together for dinner and has left me several unhappy messages about my ditching her to come back here early. My grandfather also expressed his displeasure about being left with my grumpy mother because of me. But you know the thing that really sucked today?”

“Coming home and finding your sister in our bed.”

Her gaze softened. “I love that you keep sayingourbed.”

“It is because you and me, we’re together. No one will come between us. Not even her.”

She nodded and took a big sip of wine. “And though my business went well today despite the annoyances that popped up, the thing that sucked was missing you and wishing you’d come with me.”

He leaned in and kissed her softly. “I missed you, too. I wasn’t looking forward to sleeping alone. More than that, we hadn’t spoken. I just wanted to hear from you, to know how your day went, to talk about the business and family stuff, and to know you were okay.”

“I’m sorry. I should have called or texted, even if it was just to tell you I only had a minute and everything was fine. Next time—because we both know there’s going to be lots of next times—I will communicate better with you.”

“I’ll do the same. I could have called, texted, or emailed you. Instead I obsessed over the fact that you hadn’t and that it meant something when it didn’t. I missed you sitting beside me at dinner. I wanted you to play water war with me and Alex. And the thing I wanted most, I still get to have.”

“What’s that?”

“This. The time we spend together alone, talking and making love before we sleep side by side. I get to wake up next to you and be the first person you see and you’re the first person I see. I love that we start and end our day together.”

This time, she leaned in and kissed him. “I do, too. Why do you think I rushed back here to you?” She grinned, then stuffed another cracker with cheese and sausage into her mouth.

He held his glass out to her. “Thank you for coming home early.”

She clinked her glass to his. “There’s no place I’d rather be than with you.”

They sipped their wine and finished off the food, letting the quiet surround them and the events of the evening fade into the background of their minds.

Summer set her empty wine glass on the food tray, then looked directly at him. “Cody.” She didn’t need to say anything more.

He took her hand and settled onto his back on the soft carpet, the fire blazing beside him. Drawing her up and over him, he slid his free hand up the back of her neck and in her silky hair and kissed her. “Is this what you wanted?”

She straddled him, rocking her hips, moving against his hard cock. “Yes. But more.”

“Absolutely. Lots more.” He leaned up and kissed her, sliding his tongue along hers, tasting the wine on her lips. He pulled the blouse from her pants and up and over her head, diving back into the kiss he’d hated to interrupt. She pressed her breasts to his chest, giving him all the access he needed to undo the bra clasp at the back and pull it off her, too.

He kept kissing her and rolled her to her back beside him so he could undo the button and zipper on her slacks and push them and her panties down her thighs. She kicked them off the rest of the way.

She broke the kiss, rose, and went for his shirt as he undid his pants. It was all hands and pushing and pulling until he was naked on his back and she straddled him again.
