Cody turned to the doctor. “I owe you for getting her in right away.”

The doctor shrugged that off. “What are best friends for?”

“Whatever he owes you, I’ll double it,” she swore.

Dr. Underwood grinned. “I’m going to keep you here for a couple hours, so I know the headache is either gone or we’re at least managing your pain until it is. I’ll be back in a little while to check on you.”

Dr. Underwood slapped Cody on the back. “She’ll be okay. You can take her home tonight. A good night’s sleep plus the meds should do the trick, but if not, call me.”

“Thank you. And seriously, name it, whatever you want for the VIP urgent care, it’s yours.”

“Same as always, a bottle of top-shelf scotch.”

“I’ll send you a case,” Summer assured him, finally feeling like her head wasn’t going to explode.

“I like her, man.”

“Thanks, David. This means everything to me.”

“Yeah, I can see that. You can take me out for a beer sometime and tell me all about her.”

“You got it.”

“And maybe bring her and your sister. You know, to get Brooke out of the house and out with friends.”

Cody eyed the good doctor. “She could use some adult time.”

“How’s Alex?”

“A handful, but better. He and Brooke have both found their smiles and happiness again.”

“I’m really glad to hear that. I’ll be back soon.” Dr. Underwood closed the drape to give them some privacy.

Cody pulled a chair over and sat next to Summer.

She turned on her side, making sure she didn’t disturb the IV in her arm, rested her head on the pillow, and stared at him. “I’m sorry about our date.”

“Don’t be. I’m just glad you’re okay now.”

“It was stupid not to bring my medication. Even stupider not to get a refill here when I knew those headaches weren’t going to stop until they escalated to this.”

“It’s been a hell of a week. I made you pack too fast. If you’d told me you needed something, I would have called David to get it for you.”

“It’s not your responsibility to take care of me. I knew better and I didn’t do anything but ignore it.”

“You mean you were too busy holding off your mom, working like a maniac for your grandfather, trying to get to know everyone here, and not having any time for yourself.”

She managed a half smile. “Look how well you know me.”

Cody leaned in and put his hand on her face. “When I saw you lying on the floor like that in so much pain...” His eyes filled with remorse. “I thought something really terrible happened to you. Not that what happened wasn’t bad.”

“I’m sorry I told you to shut up.”

“I understand. The last thing I’d ever want to do is cause you more pain.”

“You rescued me.”

“Summer,” her dad called out.
