“Try these,” Summer called out.

She took the gorgeous strappy silver heels that weren’t too high or too low. She’d be comfortable in them, without feeling like she was teetering on stilts.

Sure enough, they fit great and made her legs look amazing. She’d have to remember to favor hersprainedankle a little longer.

She didn’t want to give credit to Summer for pulling this together, but the woman knew what she was doing when it came to looking good in a dress.

Natalie stepped out.

Haley was by the shoes with Miranda, picking out something.

Summer clasped her hands together and held them up at her chest. “Oh. My. God. Stunning.” She smiled so big her cheeks went pink. “Do you like it?”

Natalie turned to the larger mirror and stared at herself, surprised by the difference in how she looked in the two dresses. This one made her feel sexy, but in a different way.

“You look confident and so grown up,” Miranda said.

She turned to her mom. “Do you mean that?”

Miranda nodded, her eyes a bit misty. “I can see it.” She took a sweeping look from Natalie’s head to her feet and back up again. “It’s perfect. You’re so lovely. How did you grow up so fast?”

Natalie wiped away a tear, then turned to Summer. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. If my mom taught me anything, it’s how to pick a dress.”

Miranda glanced at Summer. “You’ve got a great eye.”

“Years of shopping practice with my mom. It’s the one thing we did together the most.”

Miranda took Summer’s hand. “I’m so glad we got to do this together.”

Summer’s eyes shone with unshed tears. “Me too. Thank you for letting me tag along.”

“We wanted you here,” Haley said, holding up a pair of black flats with satin trim in one hand and a pair of silver ones in the other. “Which ones?”

Miranda looked at Summer. “I think you can find her something more suited to the young lady she is today, not the little girl she used to be.”

Summer went to the shoe display and chose a pair of silver kitten-heel pumps that had a heel strap and cutouts on both sides of the pointed toe. A rhinestone daisy adorned the top of each shoe. “Sophisticated and cute.”

“Those are the ones I wanted, but Mom always makes me get flats.”

“Not this time,” Miranda said. “Those are so you.”

Haley snatched them from Summer’s hand and put them on. She shifted her feet this way and that way, admiring them.

Natalie’s heart warmed watching her sister, so happy and excited about the shoes.

Natalie wasn’t the only one who’d grown up. Haley wasn’t so little anymore, either.

It had been strange to see her sister on campus this past year after not being at the same school for three years because of their age difference. Natalie would see Haley with her friends, hanging out on the quad at lunch, and passing in the halls. Natalie had made it clear she didn’t have time for her little sister when she was with her friends.

How stupid was that? Haley was fun to hang out with, and all of Natalie’s friends liked Haley.

Natalie caught Summer staring at her instead of Haley, with a soft grin on her face and eyes that held approval and understanding. “You’re both beautiful and so special.”

Miranda hugged Summer, then stepped back, choked up. “All of you are.”

Natalie hadn’t appreciated her mother enough. “Dad’s going to keel over when he sees you in your dress.”
