She stills against me. Should I have pretended ignorance? Nah. Not how I want us to go from here. This was hard for her, revealing herself. She did it so that I’d know I matter. I want her to know I return the sentiment. “You’re part of a wealthy family that does covert operations, a vigilante network. Your secret is now mine—to my grave. I swear it.”

She grins as if she never had a doubt. “We prefer the term spies.”

Cheeky. “And your family has been doing this for years?”

“That I can’t answer.”

“Okay. Don’t take offense, but I thought you were government.”

“Highly offensive.”

Very cheeky. “Be honest with me; how likely is it that you and your family can help me find Sofía? Help us locate Rosa?”

“If anyone can find Sofía, it’s them. But they don’t know I’m searching for Rosa and would likely call me home if they knew how deeply involved with the search for a serial killer I am. Tonight, we’re on our own when I tag Armand.”

My skin crawls with the idea. He desires her; I saw it in his greasy eyes. “Luv, it’s so dangerous. Let me put the device on Armand.”

She shakes her head with determination. “No. Stop worrying. I was two inches from you and you didn’t know it was me. Trust me. All I have to do is plant the tracker and back off. If he has Rosa, if he goes to where he’s keeping her tonight, we’ll find her.”

“I trust you—as you trust me to be your backup.”

A trilling sound comes from her phone. She jumps out of my arms and out of bed. I watch as she scrambles around the room picking up clothes.

“What’re you about?” I say, tension rising in my shoulders.

“Didn’t you hear my cell?”

“A text?”

She finishes putting on her shirt. “No. A summons.” She grabs her phone, looks around the room, finds the one area with a blank wall, and sits herself in the corner. She looks up at me with serious warning in her eyes. “Not a word. They can’t know I’m here.”

They? Fuck. She means her family.

DADA

Because Sean has exactly one area in his entire apartment without artwork on it, I’m sitting on his floor, squeezed into a corner, taking the call from my handler, AKA Tony.

Holding up my phone, I log into the secure site for the video call.

Tony’s already there. “Hey, D,” he says with a half-yawn, rubbing his hazel eyes.

I’m grateful his nickname for me matches my cover name. Actually, his nickname for all members of our team, except Bridget, for obvious reasons, is the first letter of our first names. He calls BridgetBridge.

For someone who can figure out the most complex of cases, Tony likes to keep things simple. Today, that’s a help since I haven’t told Sean my real name.

Purposefully keeping my eyes on my cell and not on Sean, who has gotten out of bed and is quietly dressing, I say, “Past your bedtime? It’s 9:30 PM.”

“Forget what it’s like here? I’m up early, teaching lessons. Including yours.”

“Boohoo, I have to wake up in a mansion where people make me breakfast and clean my room,” I say, holding my cell with one hand braced on my knee and wiping fake tears with the other. “Want to switch?”

In response, he laughs. “I don’t like hats.”

Funny. “What’s this about?”

He shrugs. “Gracie’s call.”
