Page 6 of His Christmas Wish

“Oh.” Ayaka’s eyes are casually looking around the store, but I swear I see a hint of sadness in them. As if she feels bad for not noticing.

“They were black right?” she asks.

“His shoes? Yes. black, shiny with matching laces. They’re leather, I believe.”

“Okay, how about this?” Ayaka holds up some gray cufflinks, but I shake my head.

“He’s not that much of a fashionista. Though, yes, he takes care of his appearance, but unless you’re going to see it, he isn’t going to wear it. Try finding a tie or a shirt.”

We look around for about five minutes before Ayaka comes back with a silver silk tie.

“How about this? I mean, he usually wears dark colours, so it will show, right?” She lays the silk across the pale skin of her hand as she shows me the tie.

“Um, yes, that could work,” I stutter, slightly distracted by her slender fingers and French tip nails.

We buy the tie and head to the next store for one of her clients that she’s going to have a meeting with Anne Cochran.

“Okay, what about Anne?” I ask.

“Well, what do you think?” she asks. We pass by Mac and I nod toward the store.

“How about we check out here? She loves makeup. And the colours red and purple” I suggest.

“Okay,” she says, and we head into the store.

It only takes a few minutes before Ayaka has chosen a tube of deep red lipstick and a purple eye liner pencil.

“Wonderful,” I grin.

Ayaka gives me a pert smile and puts them on the counter.

“Now what?” she asks, and I look at my list.

“We’ve got Mr. and Mrs. Cotter next.”

We go through the list and when we hit the halfway mark, I suggest lunch. We head over to Hendriks Restaurant & Bar and take a seat.

A waitress comes over and hands us some menus and fills up our glasses of water.

“Welcome to Hendriks Restaurant & Bar. I’m Tracy, your waitress for today. Is there anything I can get you to start with?”

“Water will be fine for me,” Ayaka says.

“We’ll be fine for now. Thank you.”

The waitress smiles and leaves us. I look at Ayaka, who looks through the menu, reading her options.

“What would you like?” I ask.

Ayaka bites her lips as she ponders her lunch options.

“I don’t know,” she mumbles. “What’re you going to have?”

“Well, I was thinking of having the Greek tacos and then a California veggie burger with a beer.”

“Hmm, maybe I’ll have that too,” she says while looking over the menu. She puts it away and takes a sip of her water. “Yes, I’ll have that as well.”

“You drink beer?” I blurt out.
