“It’s a good thing I’m smarter than her.”

Chapter 13

Belle

“What were you doing?” I hear Tiffany before I see her.

“I was just putting in my two weeks.” I shrug and try to push past her.

“Where are you gonna go?” She laughs dryly.

“California.” I shrug, like it’s no big deal.

“You can’t be serious.” She stops and looks at me.

“Why wouldn’t I be?”

“You’re really going to California to play house with a guy you barely know?”

“If it’s going to get me out of Deadhorse, then why not?”

“He could be a murderer.” I bite my tongue. She really has no idea.

“So could I.”

“Ha. Right.” She flips her hair and heads towards the office. “Don’t come crying to me when he leaves you on the side of the road.”

“Whatever happened to being happy for your friends?” I ask, against my better judgment.

“Please. We haven’t been friends in months.” She rolls her eyes and walks into the office.

She’s not wrong.

Later that night, I’m in the back getting my stuff packed up. The club is silent, so I think I’m the only one left.

I grab my bag and turn to walk out the door, when I almost run into Tiffany.

“Jesus, I didn’t think anyone was here.”

“It’s just us.” She eyes me, and it leaves me with an uneasy feeling in my stomach.

I pull my phone out of my bag and shoot Maddox a quick text. I want him to know I’m here alone with Tiffany and something feels off.

“Who was that?” Her eyes are glassy and red.

“Are you on something?” I study her face, and she swats me away.

“Who were you texting?”

“None of your business. I’m gonna go.” I try to squeeze past her, when she grips onto my forearm. Her nails are digging into my skin.

“What the fuck, Tiffany?”

“Why are you trying to get out of here so fast?”

“Because you’re being weird. I want to go home.”

She shoves me back into the room. “How did your mom’s house catch fire?”
