“We really are. But we make a damn good team.” She grins at me.

“A team of psychopaths.” I laugh.

I’m relieved when we finally make it to the car. It felt like the walk back took a hell of a lot longer than the walk to the creek, and we weren’t even carrying a body this time.

“I’m fucking exhausted.” She sighs, leaning her head against the headrest.

I watch her close her eyes. Her long, bleach blonde hair falls in waves down past her shoulders. Belle might be rough around the edges, but she’s gorgeous.

“It’s not polite to stare,” she says, her eyes still closed.

“How did you know I was staring?”

“I can feel your eyes on my body.” She says it like it’s no big deal, but it makes me feel some type of way.

“Is that so?” I smirk, shifting the car into gear.

“Don’t let that go to your head, dumbass.”

Without even saying anything, she follows me into my house and into my bed. I decide not to mention that to her. I know if I bring it up, she’ll get pissed and leave.

She’s like a ticking time bomb. You never know how much time you have with her until she explodes. Who knows when I’ll say the wrong thing and she’ll disappear for hours at a time, just to prove to me that she can.

It’s a real bitch to catch feelings for an independent woman.

“Why are you being all quiet and broody tonight?”

“What are you talking about?”

“Ever since we left the creek, you’ve been acting weird. It’s like you’re all up in your feelings or something. Don’t start acting like a woman, Maddox.” I don’t even have to see her face to know she’s rolling her eyes.

“Fuck off,” I mumble, while she laughs at me.

“I told you not to get attached to me.”

“Who said I’m attached? You’re just over there assuming shit.”

“Please, Maddox. I’m a woman. I can tell you have feelings for me. I warned you it wasn’t a good idea. I have no intention of ever settling down. That’s not my style.”

“You don’t have to tell me that, it’s clear to me that you aren’t the type to settle down. I’m not stupid.”

She crawls into bed next to me, her hand instinctively going to my hair. “You’re a great fuck, Maddox. I even consider you a friend now, but I have no desire to fall in love and shit. If it feels like it’s heading in that direction, I’m out.”

I know she’s serious. I’m not in love with the girl, but I know I care about her. I wouldn’t be doing half of the stupid shit I’ve done since I got to Deadhorse if I didn’t care about her.

“I don’t do love.” That’s the truth. I’ve never been in love, and I don’t plan on falling in love anytime soon. Especially not with someone like Belle.

“Good. Don’t start now and we’ll be fine.” She pulls her hand from my hair, and it travels down my chest. “I’d be upset if we had to stop whatever this is we’re doing. I kind of enjoy it when you put your dick inside me.”

I laugh, I can’t help it. This woman is insane. She just says exactly what’s on her mind. She doesn’t even give it a second thought.

“You’re so fucked up.”

“What does that make you?” She laughs, rolling over to face the window.

I lay in silence for a while, until I can hear her heavy breathing. It’s clearly not a good idea to get wrapped up in Belle, but I’ve never been known for making smart decisions.
