Chapter 23

Maddox

What. The. Fuck?

“Did you just say you're pregnant.”

“Yeah. I mean, I haven’t taken a test yet, but I also haven’t started my period in a month, and I’ve been throwing up like crazy.” She says it like it’s nothing. Like she didn’t just tilt my world on its axis.

“So, you ready to dump this body?”

“Did you just tell me you’re pregnant and then ask me about dumping a body all in the same breath?”

She shrugs. “Yeah. We have to get rid of the body. Then, we can buy a pregnancy test and figure out what comes next.”

“You’re fucking insane.”

“Maddox. You already knew this.” She rolls her eyes.

I’m stunned into silence. She has me at a complete loss for words right now. Is she excited? Am I?

“Let’s get this body to Deadhorse.”

“You’re not helping me lift his body.”

“Don’t take this away from me, Maddox. I need to see this through to the end.” She’s practically begging me to let her help.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“If I didn’t just tell you I was pregnant, would you have let me?”

“Well, yeah––”

“Okay then. I’m helping,” she interrupts before I have a chance to argue.

“Fine, but let me do most of the heavy lifting, okay? Promise me that.”

“Fine. Don’t start babying me though. You know I hate that shit.”

By some miracle, we manage to get Chet into the trunk of my car. “You sure you're up for this car ride?”

“Yeah. This is the best option. We need to get him as far away from us as possible.”

The drive is long. We stop halfway and grab a room for the night, not even phased by the fact we’re traveling with a dead body in the truck. We’re trying to time everything exactly right so that we’re arriving in Deadhorse in the middle of the night.

It’s about ten at night when we roll into town.

“Everything looks exactly the same, but so much different. Does that make sense?” Belle has been quiet most of the ride, until now.

“Yeah. I think that’s what happens when you leave home and come back.”

We park the car down the road from the field and pull Chet from the trunk. “Can I hold his feet?” she asks, and she seems to be lost in thought.

“Yeah, of course. Is everything okay?”

“I’m just finding it hard to believe that I’ve dumped so many bodies in this same place. It all started all those years ago with your dad.”

“You were so young back then; you didn’t know what you were doing.”
