Prologue

Knox

7 Years Earlier

“Don’t be late, Knox,” my dad warns from the other end of the phone.

I roll my eyes, because I know he can’t see me. “I won’t, Dad. I never am.”

My dad is always riding my ass. I’m next in line to take over one of our––many––family companies and he makes sure that I never forget that. As if I could when he’s constantly reminding me.

Sometimes I’m jealous of my brothers. They carry on without a care in the world. They’re currently getting ready to head out to a party. A luxury I feel like I’ve never had, even though I’m almost a junior in high school.

They might only be two years younger than me, but it feels like lightyears when I have to watch them live life while I sit on the sidelines.

“You wanna come?” Kane sticks his head in my bedroom to ask.

“You know I can’t.” I sigh.

“You’re allowed to let yourself have some fun, Knox,” he says, opening the door wider so he can come inside.

“That’s not true and you know it. One of us needs to be at his beck and call.”

“It doesn’t have to be just you. That’s what I’m trying to say.” He walks over, sitting down on my bed.

“Who else would it be?”

Kane doesn’t know how to take anything in life seriously, and Kai has his own things going on.

Neither one of them are fit to run a company and they know it. I’m the oldest, and it should be on my shoulders.

“Sophia’s here!” Kinsley, my baby sister, hollers from downstairs.

My body freezes at the mention of her name.

Sophia Turner.

Sophia's parents are friends with our parents. She’s been coming around for years now. I’ll never forget the first time I saw her. My parents were having a get together at our house. She was only about ten at the time, but I had never seen a girl as pretty as she was. I was about to turn twelve, and girls were the only thing on my mind.

That was before my dad got his claws into me and ruined whatever bit of childhood I had going for me.

“Earth to Knox.” I’m brought back to reality by Kane, waving his hand in my face.

“Yeah, sorry. What’s up?”

“You sure you don’t wanna go with us?”

“No. You know I can’t.” I button up the last few buttons on my shirt before grabbing my jacket from the chair in my room.

I’m almost halfway down the stairs when I hear her voice, and it stops me in my tracks.

“Hey, Knox.”

I turn around and grip the railing, afraid I might stumble down the stairs.

Sophia Turner is clearly an angel. She looks like a mix between Margot Robbie and Blake Lively. Tonight, she’s wearing a pair of black skinny jeans and a white tank top that does wonders for her natural tan. Her bright blue eyes remind me of the ocean. I could get lost in them.

I’ve never been so gone for a girl before. She distracts me. I’m not sure that’s something I can afford right now.
