My blonde hair is longer than it’s ever been, so I leave it down in loose waves that drape down my back.

I’m admiring myself in the mirror when I hear the doorbell ring. Grabbing my silver clutch from my dresser, I head downstairs.

“Oh, wow.” Dylan’s eyes scan my body when I pull the door open, causing a satisfied smirk to cross my face.

This is always the reaction a girl hopes to get when she gets all dressed up.

“Thanks,” I say, smiling.

I let my eyes linger over him. He looks dapper in his black suit. You can tell he works out, because it’s hugging him in all the right places. His messy blonde hair looks perfect on the top of his head.

“You don’t look so bad yourself.”

He smiles, linking his arm through mine. “Are you ready?”

We walk towards his car, and I fight to push down the sense of nagging I feel. I’m with a perfectly nice guy right now, but all I can think about is Knox.

The drive to the hotel takes about twenty minutes. The girls at work told me the hospital always rents out the nicest hotel when they throw this gala.

The valet parks Dylan’s car, and he grabs my hand before we head inside.

“Thanks for coming with me tonight, Sophia.” He shoots me a genuine smile, and I’m immediately worried that I’m sending him mixed signals by agreeing to this.

Sure, I liked him in the beginning, but now that Knox has weaseled his way back into my life, I can’t seem to think about anyone else.

“No problem. It’s exciting to find out what all the fuss is about,” I say, making him laugh. His laugh lights up his face, and I wish it made me feel something.

When we walk inside, I’m ashamed that the first thing I do is scan the room for any sign of Knox.

I find him, in a corner, with a brunette in a red dress, whispering in his ear.

He isn’t paying any attention to her. As soon as our eyes meet, he scowls. Anger is radiating off his body as he looks between Dylan and me.

The way he’s looking at me should scare me––it should be a giant red flag––but instead, it does the opposite. I have to squeeze my legs together to ease the throbbing between them.

“You okay?” Dylan asks, breaking my attention from Knox.

“Oh yeah, I’m fine. It’s just a little warm in here,” I lie.

“Yeah, these things can get a little stuffy. Do you want a drink?”

“Sure. I’ll take whatever she’s got,” I say, nodding towards the waitress heading our way.

He grabs us two glasses of champagne. We find the table with his name on it––I gave up my seat when I decided to be his plus one––and sit down.

“I’m going to have to get up and mingle. Do you want to join me?” he asks, leaning in close so I can hear him.

My eyes drift to Knox, who is still staring at me. No, he’s not staring, he’s glaring at me.

“Um, sure.” My words stumble out. I’ll never make it through this night with Knox here. “I just need to run to the restroom really quick.”

“I’ll be around,” he says, both of us getting up from the table.

I head towards the back of the room. I need a moment to catch my breath and get my emotions in check.

I turn down the dark hallway towards the bathrooms, and almost immediately a hand wraps around my forearm, pulling me into a back corner.

“What the hell?”
