“Of course. I have the statements you both gave to the police. I have statements that her coworkers have given which show me she is clearly stable. I also have a statement from her mother. She called the station about a half hour ago. She told me that the girl was running from an abusive marriage. She admitted that she didn’t take her daughter’s cries for help seriously and she regrets that. I was on my way to your house to give you the good news, but you beat me to it,” he says.

“So, what happens now?” I ask.

“Well, obviously the guy has no credibility. Nothing he’s saying will hold up in court with all the evidence stacked up against him. I’m on my way to the hospital to break the news to him. I’ll stop by your house when I’m done there,” he says.

“Thanks, Preston,” I say, before hanging up the phone.

Sophia walks into the kitchen a few minutes later, worry etching her face.

I relay everything that Preston just finished telling me, and I can see her body visibly relax at the news.

“You’re not going back to that apartment,” I tell her.

“I can’t live here, Knox. Who knows what kind of hell your dad would put you through?”

“Let me worry about my dad. I want to make sure you’re safe. This is the only way I know how,” I say, wrapping my arms around her.

“Hello? Anybody home?” Kinsley calls out.

“You’re going to need to open up to a lot more than just me, you know that, right?” I tell her.

“I know. I’m ready,” she says.

Kinsley walks into the kitchen with a huge smile on her face.

“I’m so happy you're back,” she says, walking over and throwing her arms around Sophia.

“I have a lot to tell you,” Sophia says.

“Is everything okay?” Kinsley asks, looking back and forth between the two of us.

“Not exactly, but I think it will be,” Sophia says, smiling over at me.

“I’ll give you girls some time to catch up. I have some things I need to take care of in the office,” I tell them.

I watch them walk out of the kitchen. I have a few important things I need to do. I need to figure out how to get this house in my name instead of my dad’s. I also need to figure out how to cut ties with the firm.

I don’t know how many hours pass before someone clears their throat.

Sophia is leaning against the doorframe to my office, looking amazing as usual, holding a bottle of wine and two glasses.

“I thought you could use a break,” she says, holding the glasses and bottle of wine in my direction.

“It’s like you can read my mind or something,” I say, smirking. “How did it go with Kinsley?” I ask, grabbing the glasses from her.

“It went well. We shed a lot of tears, there was a lot of hugging, but everything is good now,” she says, smiling.

“I’m glad to hear that.”

“What are you up to in here?” she asks, grabbing one of the chairs on the other side of the desk.

“I’m trying to figure out how to cut ties with the firm and take this house from my dad,” I tell her honestly.

“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” she asks.

I shrug. “I think anything that involves getting out from under my dad’s thumb is a good idea at this point.”

“Any ideas?” she asks, pouring us both a glass of wine.
