“You’re welcome. I love you,” she says.

“I love you too, Mom. I’ll call you later, okay?”

We hang up, and I turn around, wrapping my arms around Knox’s waist.

“I take it you didn’t talk to your mom the other day?” he says, raising his eyebrows.

“No, I wasn’t ready,” I admit.

“I understand that. Trust me,” he says, tipping my chin up to kiss me.

“Who are you and what have you done with Knox?” I laugh.

“I’m still the same me. I’ve just been trying to keep this version locked away for a while now.”

“Don’t do that anymore, okay?” I say, standing on my tiptoes to kiss him again.

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Okay, you need to go. I’ll stop distracting you,” I tell him, before pulling away reluctantly.

“Later, it’s just me and you,” he says.

“Is that a promise?” I ask.

“It’s a demand.”

“Now, there’s the Knox I know,” I say, laughing, before running to the bathroom before he can catch me.

“I have to work tomorrow, so if you were serious about me moving in, we’ll have to get all my stuff later. I need to call my landlord and get everything squared away with my contract,” I tell him from the other side of the bathroom door.

“We’ll go get what you need until you can move out. Surely, you know I was serious?” he says.

“You can’t blame me for asking,” I tell him, stripping my clothes off and turning on the shower.

“We’re going to dive into this conversation later,” he warns. “I love you.”

It’s been a rocky road for the two of us. He has to know that I’m still going to have some apprehensions even though I know he loves me.

Chapter 18

Knox

I’m trying not to let Sophia’s apprehension bother me as I make my way to the University. It’s not like I can blame her. We’re treading into new territory with this whole relationship thing. It was only just weeks ago that I was a complete asshole to her.

I pull into the parking lot of the University a few minutes later. I can’t believe I finally get to do something I love, without living under my dad’s thumb.

“I’m here to see Mr. Rigney,” I tell the secretary.

“He’s been anxiously waiting for you since your conversation this morning,” she says, smiling.

I walk into the office, and I’m met with the biggest smile.

“Knox, tell me you were serious on the phone,” he says.

“I was. The University is all mine. If you have a place for me, I’d love to teach,” I tell him.

“You’re in luck. Mr. Bridges, one of our history professors, just announced his retirement last week. I’ve been struggling to find someone else. How do you feel about teaching history?” he asks.
