Prologue

Igave my heart to the devil and paid the ultimate price.

I guess that’s what happens when you give everything you have to someone that doesn’t want it. I lay here, shattered, and he doesn’t even care.

Why would he?

I knew from the beginning what I was getting myself into, but I did it anyway.

Now I’m alone and broken.

Things willneverbe the same again.

Chapter One

CHARLOTTE

Perfect hair, check.

Perfect makeup, check.

Perfect clothes, check.

I mentally check everything off as I stare into my floor length mirror, smoothing my hands down my baby blue sundress. There isn’t one loose curl on my head. Everything is tied together perfectly, right down to my manicured toes.

The house is quiet. It always is. We live in a giant house on the outskirts of town, away from anyone and everyone. My parents rarely grace me with their presence. The minute I hit high school, they fired the nanny, and basically left me alone. It’s usually just me and Jannie, our housekeeper.

I hear the ding of an incoming text message, most likely alerting me that Cameron, my best friend, is here. I take one last look at myself before turning around, grabbing my phone to head downstairs.

Cameron Garrett has been my best friend my whole life. I like to joke that I picked her out of a crowd in our Kindergarten year on the playground, but in reality, it was her that picked me.

I was alone on a swing, dressed way too fancy for a public school. Most of the kids had made fun of me all morning for my frilly dress and black, shiny shoes. Not Cameron though. She had on a purple T-shirt and a pair of jean shorts, and she walked over to me, determined to make me her friend. We’ve been inseparable ever since.

“Hey, bitch.” She peeks her head out of the window of her car, a huge grin on her face, and giant black sunglasses covering her eyes.

I flip her off before sliding into the car next to her.

“What’s up, skank?” I say, pulling my glasses from my purse and putting them on.

“Same ol’, shit. Except my dear ol’ brother is coming home today,” she says.

I imagine she’s rolling her eyes under her sunglasses.

“Why? I thought the point of college was to leave and not come back?” I point out.

“My thoughts exactly.” She sighs.

“That’s really going to put a damper on our summer plans.” I sigh.

“I know. He’s always in my business.”

I put my hand out the window, feeling the warm air on my skin. Most people don’t enjoy the humidity in Louisiana, but I love it. I would never last someplace cold. Warm air and sunshine are like medicine to me. It keeps me out of my head.

“Earth to Charlie.” Cameron’s voice pulls me from my thoughts.

“I’m sorry.” I look over at her with a smile. “I’ve been so distracted lately.”

“Sounds like you need to get laid.” She laughs.
