“Charlotte…” I hear Jasper call my name, his voice getting closer.

I quickly toss my phone back in my purse and shove my purse down into my bag.

“Yes?” I reply.

“What’s taking so long?”

This guy is insufferable. He won’t even let me have five minutes alone.

“Sorry, I was just admiring the room,” I tell him, opening the bedroom door to find him standing outside.

“Come, let’s have a drink outside. I made you something,” he says, handing me a glass.

There’s no way I can drink something he fixed. I don’t trust him.

“Thanks,” I tell him, following him outside to a large patio with a pool.

“Any changes you want to make around the house will have to be approved by me, of course. But I think the home should work just fine. I’ve put a lot of work into it,” he says, grabbing a chair at the patio table.

“Everything looks fine,” I lie, joining him at the table.

“So, tell me about school,” he says.

“It’s my senior year. Most of my classmates have been taking trips and going to parties. I'm here,” I tell him.

He doesn’t need to know that I wouldn’t have been going out this weekend anyway, thanks to everything that went down last night.

“That’s for the best. It wouldn’t do good for your image to be out partying,” he says.

“Right,” I say, at this point just trying to pacify him.

“How many men have you been with?” he asks, shocking me.

“Excuse me?” I say.

“I’d like to know how many people you’ve been with. It’s not unusual for people in a relationship to ask that,” he says, talking to me like I’m stupid.

“We’re not in a relationship,” I point out.

“Don’t be stupid, Charlotte. We’ll be married in seven months.” He scoffs.

“I barely know you.”

“If you’re a virgin, that's nothing to be ashamed of. I’d take great pleasure in knowing I’m the first in that pussy,” he says, making me feel sick to my stomach.

“I don’t appreciate the way you’re talking to me right now. It’s pretty crass,” I tell him, sitting my drink down, preparing to stand up and go back inside.

His hand reaches out fast, gripping my wrist.

“Let’s get one thing straight. We’ll talk about whatever the fuck I want to. We’ll do whatever the fuck I want to. You don’t have a say in anything anymore. It’s a shame your parents never taught you any manners. Sit the fuck down,” he says, squeezing my wrist painfully.

I sit down, because honestly, I’m scared of what he might do to me if I don’t.

“Good girl,” he says, just as his phone rings.

I feel my hope dwindle. I have this horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach that this is a preview of my life, and I’m not sure there’s anything I can do about that.
