“It wasn’t just me. Our paramedic, Angela, says you got her out of that car as quickly as you could. That was impressive thinking in a traumatic situation,” she says, turning to look at me.

I’m uncomfortable with the attention, so I just nod in response.

Once she’s gone, Mitch pulls me in for a hug. He’s crying, which is something I’ve rarely seen from him.

“I’m sorry, Clark. Thank you.”

“There’s nothing to be sorry for. Anyone would have done the same,” I tell him, trying to brush him off.

He pulls away, looking at me.

“They wouldn’t have. It’s very clear to me that you love her. I’m not going to lie, it’s fucking weird, but it might be something I’m willing to live with.”

Before I can respond, Delaney comes running into the waiting room.

“Oh my God. Is she okay? Where is she?” she asks.

“Everything is going to be okay,” Mitch assures her.

She wraps her arms around him, sobbing into his chest.

I slump back down in my seat, putting my head in my hands. This has been the longest hours of my life, but now I have to figure out how to take care of the problem at hand.

Chapter Twenty

MARLEY

The doctor just finished telling me that she’s not sure how I came out of this accident as unscathed as I did. She told me I must have someone watching over me. It nearly tore me apart when she said that, because there’s no doubt in my mind Mallory had a hand in this.

I lean my head back against the pillow, wiping tears from my eyes.

“Ma’am, are you feeling up to some visitors?” A nurse peeks her head into my room.

Visitors? Who would even be here? I don’t remember anything that happened after the crash. I’m not even sure how I ended up here.

“Sure,” I tell her, mostly because I’m curious.

A couple of minutes later, Mitch and Delaney walk in. I smile over at them.

“Hey guys.”

“Marley, I’m so glad you’re okay,” Delaney says, rushing over to my side.

“Hey, sis,” Mitch says, walking to the other side of the bed, grabbing my hand.

That’s when Clark walks in. I swallow the lump in my throat at the sight of him. He looks completely torn apart. It’s hard to resist the urge to ask him to come over to me so I can wrap myself up in him.

“Hey, Mar,” he says quietly, a small, worried smile on his face.

“Hey.”

“How are you feeling?” Mitch asks, pulling me from the spell that I always seem to be under when Clark is around.

“I’ve felt better, but given the circumstances, I’d say I’m pretty lucky,” I tell him.

“Yeah, thanks to Clark. The doctor told us that if he didn’t get you out of the car when he did, this might have been a lot worse.”

I look over at him, my face scrunched up in confusion.
