I follow him inside and look around, not seeing Clark anywhere.

“I’m going to head to bed,” I say.

“Okay, I’ll talk to you tomorrow, Mar,” Mitch says, wrapping his arms around me for a quick hug.

I walk down the hallway. I can hear faint music coming from my bedroom door. I put my ear against the door and hear Taylor Swift playing on the other side. When I push the door open, Clark is standing in the middle of the room with a bouquet of flowers.

“What’s all this?” I ask, looking around.

The room is full of flowers. The lights are dimmed.

“I wanted to make sure you knew how much you were appreciated. How much I care about you,” Clark says, grinning.

I swear to God, it’s like my chest splits wide open. I practically run to him, before jumping into his arms and kissing him.

“Are you okay? How did it go?” he asks, pulling away.

“I’m okay now. Better than I’ve been in a long time, actually. I’ll tell you all about it later,” I say, kissing him again.

Things haven’t always been easy for me in life, and I know I’m a mess, but when I’m with Clark, he makes me forget about all that. He makes me want to be a better person. Not just for him, but for myself too.

Chapter Twenty Five

CLARK

“Are you sure this isn’t going to change anything?” Marley asks, standing on her tiptoes to press her lips against mine.

“Absolutely not. I’ll come visit often, and you know you can come here anytime.”

Delaney is here helping Marley pack her stuff up. Summer is over, and the fall semester is about to start up. She asked me if I wanted her to stay, but I would never keep her away from her dreams.

“Did you ever decide what major you’re sticking with?” I ask.

She’s been going back and forth between several. The last time we talked about it, she still wasn’t sure.

“Yes, I think I’m going to major in psychology. I’d love to be a counselor and hopefully help girls like Mallory, who feel like they have no one to turn to for help.” She smiles, but her eyes are filled with tears.

“I think that would be perfect for you.” I put my hands in her hair, bringing her in for another kiss.

“Can’t you two keep your hands off each other in my presence?” Mitch says, pretending to be angry, but he’s actually become really cool with the two of us being together.

I think he just really loves to see his sister happy.

We help the girls pack up Delaney’s car. Marley still hasn’t replaced hers after the wreck. I honestly think she’s still a little unsure about driving.

“I’ll be down in two weeks,” I promise her, leaning into the window to kiss her again.

“That’s enough you two,” Delaney says, making us laugh.

I wave, watching them pull out of the driveway, and my phone dings with an incoming text right away.

Marley: I love you and miss you already.

Smiling down at my phone, I reply with similar sentiment, just as Mitch walks up, slapping his hand on my shoulder.

“It’s nice to see you happy, finally,” he says.

“Thanks, man.”
