I don’t miss the disgusted look Delaney has at the mention of Riley’s name.

“No, she’ll be out later this afternoon. She had something going on this morning,” I tell him.

I’m relieved to have a short amount of peace while I can get it.

Delaney connects her phone to the Bluetooth, claiming she has the perfect beach playlist. We all laugh when‘Get Low’is the first song that comes through the speakers.

“It’s a classic,” she says defensively.

“How have you been?” I turn to look at Marley while Delaney and Mitch laugh and sing in the front.

She shrugs, laying her head on the backseat, just staring at me.

I let myself study her features. A few strands of her hair have fallen around her face. She’s got a tan from the summer sun, and it looks like more freckles have popped up across her face. Her blue eyes are shining brighter than ever today.

It’s intimate, the way we’re staring at each other, but I can’t take my eyes off her today. I haven’t seen her in a few days, and I didn’t realize I missed her until now.

“How have you been?” she asks, repeating my question.

I shrug in response, making her smile.

I’d pay a million fucking dollars to make her smile like that over and over again.

My gaze flicks down to her lips, and she sinks her teeth into the bottom one, and fuck if it doesn’t make me hard.

Laughing from the front seats pulls the two of us from our trance, and we straighten up immediately. I forgot where we were for a minute, and I realize we’re tiptoeing the line of playing a dangerous game right now.

“Tell him, Marley,” Delaney says, turning from the front to look at her friend.

“Tell him what?” she asks.

“That the Spice Girls definitely belong on the beach playlist.”

“Duh,” she says.

I laugh when Mitch groans from the driver’s seat.

“I’ll never win with these two.”

“You got that right,” I agree.

We pull up to the beach house and unload our bags. The girls are in the kitchen, making plans for the evening. Somehow, Delaney has already heard about a bonfire happening later.

“I guess we’re going to a bonfire,” Mitch says, handing me a beer.

“It appears so,” I say, my eyes locked on Marley.

“I’m going to grab a nap before we head out,” he says, clapping a hand on my shoulder.

I watch him walk down the hall, carrying his beer with him.

“Where’s he going?” Marley asks.

“Said he’s going to take a nap,” I tell her, shrugging.

“With his beer?” she says, scrunching up her nose.

It’s fucking cute when she does that.
