My phone ringing breaks up whatever was happening between us, and I see Riley’s name flash on the screen.

“Shit,” I grumble.

“Go ahead. I’m going to put my toes in the water,” she says, standing up, wiping the sand off her shorts.

“What?” I say, sliding the button on my phone to answer the call.

“Where the fuck are you?” she barks into the phone.

“Why?”

“Because I’m standing in the middle of the fucking house and you’re nowhere to be found.”

Fucking great.

I look up and Marley is looking over at me. She waves me on, seeming to understand I need to go without me saying anything.

I mouth that I’m sorry and get up, walking back to the house.

“I’ll be there in a few minutes,” I tell Riley, before hanging up on her.

When I walk into the kitchen, Riley is glaring at me.

“Where the fuck were you?”

“At the fucking beach. Jesus.”

“Where’s everyone else?” she asks suspiciously.

“The fuck if I know,” I lie.

“You’re fucking lying,” she says, pointing at me.

“Put your shit up and shut the fuck up,” I say, walking down the hall.

She follows me down the hall, slamming the door behind her.

I walk into the bathroom to avoid any more interaction with her, locking the door behind me.

“Be ready at seven. We’re going to a bonfire,” I tell her.

“I don’t want to,” she says.

“And I don’t give a shit what you want,” I tell her, turning the water on to block out the noise of her fucking mouth.

When I get out of the bathroom, I find Riley sitting on the edge of the bed, scrolling through her phone.

“Are you done acting like a fucking douchebag?” she asks.

“Are you done acting like a fucking bitch?” I ask.

“Touché,” she says.

“Are you ready? It’s six thirty.”

“I’m not staying long,” she says.

“I don’t give a shit if you go or not, but I am,” I tell her, grabbing a T-shirt and pair of shorts from my bag.
