“You knew me as a little girl. You don’t know me now. Nobody does.”

“Because you won’t let anyone know you.”

Touché.

“That’s the way I like it,” I say, staring out at the water, acutely aware of the electricity that seems to be flowing between the two of us.

A loud crack of thunder makes me jump, and he grabs my hand.

I shake him off, looking up at him.

“I don’t want your fucking sympathy, Clark.”

“I don’t know if you’ve noticed or not, but I’m not really the type of guy to give out sympathy. I don’t give a fuck what you’re feeling. I’m just here to make sure you don’t get yourself fucking killed.”

He gives me whiplash.

“I’m fine. Go away now.”

Before I can register what’s happening, he’s got me shoved up against the pillar, his hand wrapped around my throat. Not tight enough to hurt me, but tight enough to get my attention.

“Get the fuck off me,” I say.

“Let’s get one thing straight, beauty. Nobody tells me what to do. Surely you know that by now? Get your fucking shit together before it ruins your brother. He’s who I care about in this scenario,” he seethes.

I turn my head, trying to avoid his eyes. I also don’t want him to know that his words hurt me.

His fingers grip my chin, turning my face towards his.

I try to get away, but his grip is hard.

“Mitch deserves the world. He’s worried about you. Think about someone other than yourself for once.”

Thunder crashes, making me jump, and now it’s evident that it’s raining, because it’s pouring down all around us.

“Okay,” I whisper.

His eyes land on mine. It’s pitch black, except for the occasional lightning painting the sky.

“Nobody wants to lose you too, beauty,” he says, his voice low and gravelly.

It’s almost as if he cares. If I didn’t know any better, he’d have me fooled.

His thumb brushes against my bottom lip. I’m thankful that it’s dark so he can’t see the heat in my eyes, but I know he heard the sharp intake of breath from his touch. My hair is plastered to my face from the rain.

His eyes drop to my chest, and I realize that I’m wearing a white dress and it’s raining. I’ve got no bra on, it’s not really needed for a dress like this, and my nipples are pebbled. If anyone asked, I’d blame it on the cold air, not the man whose touch lights my fucking body on fire.

He curses under his breath, before his eyes collide with mine again.

Everything about this is wrong. He has a girlfriend. He’s my brother’s best friend. He’s a fucking asshole. My traitorous body doesn’t give a shit about any of that right now, though.

“If you were any other person right now, I’d fuck you until you couldn’t walk,” he growls, his filthy mouth doing a number of things to my already charged up body.

“You talk a lot of game for someone who never does any of the things he says,” I sass.

“Marley, if you weren’t Mitch’s little sister, I’d do the dirtiest things to you. Things that you only fantasize about when you’re alone in your bedroom at night,” he says, his lips brushing against my ear.

Feeling brave, I push myself against him, and he hisses.
