“Nothing, I guess. I’m going to try and get a hold of Delaney.” I shrug.

“You and Delaney still talk?” he asks.

“Of course. She’s the only person here that still talked to me after I left.”

“I’m sorry, Mar,” Mitch says, frowning.

“I didn’t mean it like that. I just meant we stayed in touch,” I reassure him.

I’m not mad at Mitch for the lack of contact. He was going through the same loss I was, and also trying to adjust to life at college. A life that didn’t seem to pan out too well.

“What are you doing today?” I ask him, trying anything to break up the awkwardness.

“Me and Clark were thinking about going to Southtown for the weekend. Do you want to come along?”

Southtown is the best beach for miles. The water is crystal clear, and honestly, I’ve never seen a more beautiful place in my life. Our family has a beach house there, which is ridiculous if you think about it, because it’s not even that far away. That’s what happens when you have too much money and nothing to do with it.

“Yeah, that sounds great,” I tell him, smiling.

I can feel Clark staring at me, but I’m trying my best to ignore him.

“Is Riley still coming?” Mitch asks Clark.

“Yeah, I told her we’d pick her up at ten. We should probably leave in the next half hour,” he responds, glancing at the clock.

“Who’s Riley?” I ask between bites.

“Clark’s girlfriend. Riley Ashford. Do you remember her?” Mitch asks.

Riley Ashford. Of course I remember her. People don’t often forget the queen bee from their high school days.

“Vaguely,” I lie.

I swallow my pancakes, but suddenly they feel like lead in my stomach. I’m sure Riley Ashford isn’t sitting at home eating pancakes right now.

“I’m going to try and call Delaney again, but I’ll go upstairs and get a bag packed,” I say, standing up from the table.

“I’ll take care of that,” Clark says, grabbing my plate, stacking it on top of his.

“Thanks,” I tell him, briefly glancing up at him.

His stare is intense. He’s got these dark green eyes that always seem to be judging you.

I practically run up the stairs, pleading with Delaney to answer the damn phone.

“Hey, bitch,” she says.

“Can you be ready and at my house in like twenty minutes?” I ask immediately.

“Where we going?” she asks.

“Southtown.”

“Absolutely.”

She hangs up and I start packing. I throw my pajamas off, digging in my bags for any swimsuit. Lucky for me, my favorite emerald green swimsuit is laying on the top of one of my bags. It’s a string bikini, with ruffles. It’s gorgeous, and it looks amazing with my hair.

After I’ve got my swimsuit on, I throw a black spaghetti strap sundress over the top. I throw an extra white suit and a change of clothes into my bag and nearly run into Delaney when I open my door.
