“You can. You have been,” I point out.

“I don’t want to anymore. Nothing makes sense unless we’re together.” He hangs his head in defeat when I back up again, my back flat against a tree.

“It doesn’t matter what we want anymore. Don’t you see that?”

I want to scream that this is all his fault. We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for him. He’s the one that crossed the line. He kept crossing the lines until there were none left.

“Can’t you see our future?” he asks softly.

“What are you talking about?” He’s inching closer to me, even though he knows I don’t want him anywhere near me.

“Us. In the future. Our house, with a picket fence and our kids. Don’t you see it? I see it every fucking day. Every single fucking day, all I see is you.” He’s crying now. I can’t see his tears, but I know they’re there.

“There is no us, Clark. There won’t ever be. You just proposed to someone. Don’t you see how fucked up this all is?” I yell.

He’s on top of me now. Not literally, but on top of my space. He’s invading my senses. I can smell his expensive cologne. I can’t breathe, because being near him is stifling.

“I don’t love her, and you know that,” he says, the anguish he’s feeling written across his face.

“It doesn’t matter. You just sealed the deal. You basically signed your life away with that proposal.” I turn my head, so I don’t have to look at him.

I can’t physically bear to look at him any longer.

“It’s not over until there’s a marriage,” he says, using his thumb and forefinger to move my face to look at him. “It’s not fucking over until I say ‘I do’.” His hot breath against my lips makes me tremble.

Then he pushes off the tree and turns to walk away from me.

“Wait for me. I don’t have a choice, but I still choose you. Every time. I still choose you,” he says, repeating his words from moments ago.

I let out a strangled cry, covering my mouth with my hand.

ChapterSeventeen

CLARK

Iwill get myself out of this shit if it’s the last thing I do. There’s no way in hell I’m marrying Riley. I had no idea Marley was here tonight. Why the fuck didn’t Mitch tell me?

“Where have you been?” Riley’s standing on the porch waiting for me when I walk up.

“None of your fucking business,” I say, pushing past her.

“Oh, I’m sorry, what? I thought you said none of my business when it clearly is. I’m wearing the fucking ring now,” she smirks, holding her hand up.

“I didn’t buy you that fucking ring, because there’s no way in hell that I ever would.” I snap.

“It doesn’t matter. You just proposed to me. It’s the talk of the evening.”

“That was for fucking show and everyone knows it.”

I push past her, into the house, searching for Mitch. I think it’s finally time to tell him what’s going on.

“Have you seen Mitch?” I ask Delaney, who’s frantically looking around the house.

“He went that way. Have you seen Marley?” She points at Mitch’s bedroom.

“She’s out there. She needs you.” I told her.

She glares at me.
