Her face turns red, and I feel bad for being rude.

“Sorry,” I tell her.

“You’re right. I am nosy. That’s why I know everything,” she says, sitting down on the couch next to me.

I look around the room for Mitch, hoping he comes to save me soon.

“He’s on the phone with a girl.” She sighs.

“Great,” I mumble.

“So, why are you sad? Because your parents are fighting?”

“What the hell?”

“I might only be eleven, but I have some advice for you,” she says, folding her arms over her chest.

“Oh yeah? I can’t wait to hear this.” I smirk.

She narrows her eyes at me but continues talking.

“If two people are meant to be then they’ll find a way. It might feel like everything is stacked against them, but if the love is real, they’ll make it work,” she says, shrugging.

Big words coming from a little girl.

“Well, what if they aren’t meant to be?” I ask, genuinely curious to hear her answer.

“Then hopefully they end it, so they stop making everyone else’s life miserable,” she says, shrugging, getting up from the couch.

“Where are you going?” I ask.

“Back upstairs. I just thought you might need someone to talk to.”

“Hey, will you tell Mitch I had to go?” I ask, getting up from the couch.

“Sure.”

“I’ve got to go make sure they stop making my life miserable,” I tell her.

I don’t know why I do. She’s eleven and it’s none of her business, but it feels like she’s being a good friend right now.

“Your mom will be okay. Heartbreak hurts for a little bit, but they don’t hurt forever,” she says, before walking back upstairs.

I scrunch my eyebrows up in confusion. What does she know about heartbreak?

When I get home, I find my mom on the kitchen floor, crying against the refrigerator.

“Are you okay?” I ask her, sitting down next to her.

“I messed up, baby,” she admits, sniffling.

“Is he gone?” I ask.

She nods in response.

“Then you didn’t mess up,” I tell her, grabbing her hand.

She smiles over at me, squeezing my hand, laying her head on my shoulder.
