“What about your brother?”

He turned to look at me, realization and horror filling his eyes. “Last I heard, he’s living in Wolford. He’s got a girlfriend. But I’ve only seen him once since I moved back. When he dropped by to visit Mom.”

“Did your brother live in Memphis?”

“That’s where he got into the bar fight that landed him in prison.”

“Was he employed there?”

His face scrunched in concentration. “I think he worked for a woodworking shop.”

“B&G Woodworking?”

His face paled as he connected the dots. “Do you think…?”

“Why do you think your father warned John Michael Stevens that the police were on the way?”

He shook his head, staring at the back wall again.

“Do you think your father had anything to do with my sister’s kidnapping or murder?”

He turned to me and swallowed. “No.” He started to say something, then stopped.

“What?” I prodded.

“We didn’t live far from Stevens’ house. Like a block away.”

“So your father could have known him.”

“Maybe, but also my brother.”

“You think Danny knew him?”

He turned grim, then waved to Misti. “I need another beer.”

She got him a new drink, and after she left, Drew said, “Danny was kind of mess back then. He shot birds with BB guns. Picked the wings off butterflies. Typical bully/creep shit.”

“Did he ever molest anyone?”

“Not that I know about, but that stuff started right around…” He paused and cringed. “Around the time your sister was taken.”

“So you think her kidnapping triggered his behavior?”

“I’m not victim blaming,” he said in a rush. “More like I always wondered if he saw something, but he was only fourteen, so there’s no way he could have been part of it, right?”

“I don’t know,” I murmured. My phone vibrated in my jeans pocket. I dug it out and glanced at the screen. Louise was sending me multiple texts.

I know you said you’d look into it, but I still know people on the LRPD, so I asked a few of them about BS. They say he’s a quiet guy. Seems intent on doing his job. Doesn’t socialize with his co-workers. They didn’t know anything about his sons. They say he doesn’t talk about them or himself. Kind of secretive

Huh

I also looked up Drew. No prior arrests or record of any kind

So squeaky clean. Good to know.

Daniel Sylvester has a long history with law enforcement, including juvie arrests

Which confirmed what Drew told me.
