Drew watched her, the corners of his lips tipping up, making it obvious he was intrigued.

“She went back to her previous boyfriend, and I wasn’t feeling much chemistry,” Nate said with a slight grin. “Satisfied?”

Louise shot him a curious glance. “I still think there’s a bigger story there, but I’ll let it go for now.”

“Don’t get distracted,” I said. “Nate, do you think you can find out his address tonight?”

“Tonight?” Louise asked. “Why not tomorrow?”

“So I can go visit him bright and early before he goes to work,” I said. “I’m sure he wouldn’t want to have this conversation at the school.”

Nate groaned, but he pulled his phone out of his jeans pocket and tapped on the screen. “You’re gonna owe me for this, Harper.”

“Sure,” I said. I’d probably agree to anything if it meant saving Ava.

He sent a text, then set his phone on the table. “We’ll see if she answers.”

Drew finished the last of his beer and put the bottle on the table. “Ladies, it’s been great meeting you, but I need to head home. I’ve got an early start tomorrow.”

“Yeah,” Louise said. “Nice meeting you too.”

Drew held out his hand to me. “Sorry about being a hard-ass when you first showed up.”

I shook his hand and looked him in the eye. “Thanks for giving me a chance.”

He dropped my hand and nodded. “Back at ya.”

Louise watched him walk toward the exit. “He’s kind of cute if you can ignore the fact that he’s with the Jackson Creek PD.”

Nate laughed. “Funny, he lamented about you being his sworn enemy when you went to the restroom before Harper showed up.”

“He’s a little old for you, don’t you think?” I asked. There had to be an age difference of at least a good decade.

She shot me a look. “Okay, Mom.”

“She has a point,” Nate said.

“Which one of us?” Louise narrowed her gaze.

He lifted his hands in surrender and laughed. “Both of you.”

“Seriously, Louise,” I said. “Are you really interested in him? I mean, he’s with the Jackson Creek PD.”

She laughed. “We all have our faults. There’s no way I’d date a deputy I work with, which means my options are pretty limited.”

“Trust me,” I grumbled, picking up my beer. “I learned it was a bad idea to date your coworker the hard way. Stay away from dating fellow employees.”

“Now, I know there’s a story there,” Nate prompted.

I shook my head. I wasn’t about to get into my relationship with Keith. Not tonight. I was already feeling pretty shitty about myself. No point in tossing another log or two onto the fire. “Another time.”

We chatted for about fifteen minutes before Nate’s phone vibrated with a text. He glanced down at his phone, then lifted his gaze to mine. “She sent the address.”

My heart beat faster. “Send it to me.”

“Be careful, Harper,” Louise said. “You’re not in law enforcement. If you press him too hard, he could report you for harassment.”

“I’ll be careful.” In fact, I had a plan. It was probably crazy, but it just might work.
