“I’m leaving,” I say. With the lights left on and the near heart attack I’ve suffered, my voice of reason is all I can hear.

“Come on, what are the chances he comes back up hereagain?”

Is he serious?“What about his wife, or a party straggler?! You are out of your mind, really. I—”

“How did you get into finance?”

His question throws me. “Huh?”

“Let’s just talk. We’re allowed to talk up here.”

Talk? He’s confusing the hell out of me. We’re supposed to be hooking up and then never speaking of any of this again. Eventhatis something I don’t want to do anymore. This was stupid and I should have listened to reason from the start.

“Why would we be talking upstairs? Lorenzo, I’m sorry, but I have to go. This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever done, and I mean that literally.”

If I didn’t know any better, I would think that I saw hurt flash in his eyes. But I certainly imagined it, because there is only humor there now.

“To get away from the noise, is one obvious reason,” he muses. “To discuss how you’re going to pay for my car repairs is another.”

I very uncharacteristically swat his arm. “Stop!” But I can’t help the giggles that escape me.

What is it about this man that has me acting like someone else?Feelinglike someone else?

Lorenzo sits at the edge of the bed and pats the spot next to him. I sit, though I’m not sure why. I honestly feel insane right now.

“So?” he presses. The change in gears is making my head spin.

“Um, well, I studied finance in college. Numbers have always made sense to me. They’re factual; logical.”

He nods his head in understanding. “How did you start working for Rowan?”

“I started as an intern when I was in my third year of college,” I explain. Lorenzo loops one of my curls in his finger, but I continue. “As soon as I graduated, he offered me a full time position as an underwriter. He’s great.”

“What’s your last name?” Lorenzo’s other hand has started drawing circles on the leg closest to him, distracting me.

“Appleton.”

“Are you from Azalea Pines?” He trails his fingers up my leg, and I squirm in response.

“Y-yes.”

“How old is Felix?” He’s still stroking me and looping his finger around my curl.

“Seven.”

“Any siblings?”

I mumble my response incoherently.

“What was that?” he asks, his voice filled with seduction. I suck in a breath when he releases my hair and runs the finger down my jaw, neck, and collarbone, settling just above my breast. His fingers start painting across my chest and I press my back into them, wanting to feel his touch through my suddenly too thick bra.

My lips part and Lorenzo stares at them, biting down on his lower lip. It makes me feral.

There’s no way Rowan would come up here a second time, would he?

“Kate?” I meet his hooded gaze with my own. The logical part of my brain is shouting again, telling me to quit succumbing to his games.

“You don’t actually care about these answers, do you?” I ask with an attempt at sounding suspicious.
