“Yeah, yeah, semantics. But he hasn’t answered your text?”

“Nope.” I glance down to hide my worry, but Char knows me better than anyone.

“What kind of date starts at 10 pm?” I question in an attempt to distract her.

She wiggles her eyebrows at me and says, “The fun kind.”

I chuckle and lean back on my pillows.

“He’s probably busy.” Oh, Char and her optimism. “He’ll text you back, I know it.”

“You can’t know that. You don’t know him.”

“Why would he give you his number if he didn’t want to talk to you?” she counters.

As I open my mouth to retort that he’s an enigma that makes no sense to me, so who knows why, my phone buzzes. My eyes widen and Char starts clapping.

I shoot up and reach for my phone on the nightstand. “Let’s see who it is before—”

Lorenzo message

“Ugh, he would have an Android,” I say, pretending I’m not doing an internal happy dance at the sight of his name on my screen.

“Open it, open it!” Char squeals.

Lorenzo: so you did text me

What in the world am I supposed to do with that?

“Oh my god, he for sure likes you,” Char says in my ear, having read the message over my shoulder. I nudge her away and type out my response.

Me: Obviously, that’s why you got an incoming message

“Let me see!” Char snatches the phone out of my hand before I can stop her and reads my reply. “Jeez, Kate, why do you have to be so dry?”

“What? It’s true. He got my message, why does he have to point it out?”

“Maybe he thought you wouldn’t text him. You didn’t even reply to his message on Times or whatever that work app is called.”

“Teams,” I correct. Char owns her own small company for interior design and has never worked a desk job a day in her life. But damn, she does have a point about Lorenzo. “Ugh, I suck at this shit!” I grab my phone from her, prepared to toss it, when the vibration of an incoming message stops me.

Lorenzo: does this mean youre giving in

His lack of punctuation annoys me. And giving in to what? Char’s at my shoulder again and she gasps.

“What? What?” I ask when she doesn’t explain.

“He has to be referencing your dark side.”

“I don’thavea dark side.”

Char quirks a brow and leans back on her hands. “Oh, really? So youdidn’tassault your ex-boyfriend and—”

“Okay, okay! God, you’re worse than he is. You’re supposed to be on my side.”

“Iamon your side, Kate. But you’re in denial. What’s wrong with having some fun with Lorenzo? So what if it can’t go anywhere?”

I gape at her. “It’s just, it’s not who I am! I don’t even want a boyfriend right now—”
