No part of me wants to do it, but I release the pedal. The car reacts instantly, decelerating. I wish someone could release the pedal on me, to slow down the racing thoughts in my mind. As the car gradually slows down, my entire body trembles with the surge of adrenaline.

“Where should we look first?” I bark.

“Donovans,” Santi quickly responds. I navigate us to the location that’s fifteen minutes out.

“Um, hi,” Char says, causing me to jump in my seat. I forgot she was with us.

“Doll, why don’t you let us drop you off somewhere? This can get dangerousrealquick,” Santi says.

“We don’t have time for that,” I interject.

“Let her out a few minutes before we get to Donovans. She can Uber. It’s not worth—”

“Yeah, hi? I’m right here.” I catch her waving in the rearview mirror. “You’re not leaving me anywhere. I don’t trust you two.”

“You don’t know shit about us,” Santi retorts.

“I know everything I need to know, Santiago.”

Santi rolls his eyes. “We—”

“We’re working with the FBI.”

My admission hovers in the air while Char gapes at me like a fish out of water. “The Federal Bureau of Investigation?”

“The one and only. Speaking of which, call Ted, Santi.”

I toss him my second phone and he quickly dials, putting it on speaker.

“Lorenzo,” Ted answers after two rings.

“And Santi,” I add. “We’ve got news for you.”

Santi swiftly brings Ted up to speed as Char listens with rapt attention. But all I can think about is Kate. Is she hurt? Fuck, is she alive? I have no idea how many warehouses we’ll have to hit before we find her.

“I’ll see if we can get a warrant issued immediately to search the hotel and rescue Kate. In the meantime—”

“If you think I’m going to wait for a warrant, you’ve lost your goddamn mind! I’m not leaving her—”

“It could be dangerous and—”

“I don’t give a damn! If—”

“Zo.” Santi’s stern voice puts an end to our dispute. The silence that fills the car is so thick with tension, I could cut it with a knife.

Ted speaks first, conceding. “If you find Kate, make sure to get video footage. We—”

“What do you mean ‘if’? Wewillfind her!” I shout, refusing to accept any other reality. I press down on the gas, propelling the car forward at full speed again.

Ted waits a beat before speaking. “Good luck.”

He disconnects the line, and I scream at the windshield, shaking the immovable steering wheel in my fists. Wecan’tbe too late.

“You’re working with the FBI?” Char whispers from the back. I don’t jump this time, but I had once again forgotten she was with us.

“Yes, doll,” Santi replies a tad sardonically as he types the info to send to Ted.

“Excuse me, but how the fuck were we supposed to know? And don’t call me that,” she snaps.
