He appears pained as he opens his mouth to say something, but Santi’s voice, accompanied by a knock at the door, interrupts him.

“Zo! We need to talk!”

Lorenzo glances at me. I quickly swipe at the tears staining my cheeks, and Lorenzo does the same. When I nod, he replies, “Come in.”

Santi barges through the door. There’s no other way of putting it. His hair is unruly, evidencing that he’s been through it as well. His eyes wash over me before pinning on Lorenzo.

“Ted just called, they’re ready for us. This can’t wait. It’s only a matter of time before—”

“I know,” Lorenzo cuts in, much calmer than his best friend. But I don’t miss the hint of worry. “Can you just give us like, five more minutes?”

“I’m so happy you’ve made up,” Santi bites out sarcastically. “But we don’t have time for this right now.”

Lorenzo and I look at each other awkwardly before averting our gazes. Santi must misread it as vulnerability rather than inaccuracy, because he crosses his arms expectantly, waiting on Lorenzo, who shifts uncomfortably beside me.

Running a hand through his hair, he says, “Fuck. I know.” He looks at me, torture etched into his every feature. When he turns back to Santi, that pain is erased, replaced by determination.

“Can you at least let me get changed?”

Santi waves a hand dismissively. “Nothing I haven’t seen before.”

I can’t help myself, I burst out laughing. I think all of the hysteria is catching up to me. I can’t catch my breath. I double over as Lorenzo crawls out of bed and into the walk-in closet.

“This is ridiculous, bro,” Lorenzo mutters as he tears his gym shorts and boxers off in one go. My laughter turns into a groan at the clothing so haphazardly discarded when there’s a hamper a foot away. The mess is quickly forgotten when I catch sight of his tight ass before he covers it with fresh underwear.

“I don’t want you getting distracted,” Santi says, pointing an accusing finger at him.

I turn solemn with the reminder of what’s about to happen. “Where are you guys going?”

“This is it. It’s now or never,” Lorenzo says evasively, putting on a pair of black jeans.

“What’s it? Is this because of me?” My lip starts to tremble as Lorenzo tosses on a fresh black shirt.

“We knew the risk,” Santi says stoically.

“We’ll have a squad undercover and ready. We should be fine,” Lorenzo says reassuringly, sliding his black combat boots on.

“Undercover?” My face pales. Regardless of the fact that I was prepared to break this off and escape, I can’t help the anxiety that takes over me.

“Kate.” Lorenzo cups each of my cheeks, his warm and calloused hands calming me. “I need you to stay here while we go. Can you do that for me?”

“I—”

“If you don’t want to do this, I understand. We can talk about it after. But I can’t go into this worrying about whether you’re safe or not. They’ll never find you here.”

“I don’t want to stay alone,” I whisper.

“Char is here,” Santi says. I almost forgot he was standing a few feet away. My eyes dart in his direction as Lorenzo glares at him.

“Dude,please. Give me two minutes.”

“Fine. Two minutes.” He stalks out the door, but I don’t hear additional steps once the door is closed. He’s probably standing outside like some sort of watch dog.

“Char will stay with you.”

“Does she know?”

“She knows some. You can fill her in on the rest.”
