“I don’t know, Ezra. Your family is... well, they’re not like mine. I’m not sure I’d fit in.”

I sit down beside her on the couch, our knees brushing slightly. “Quinn, you don’t have to decide right now. Just think about it, okay? I promise you. My family will be nothing but welcoming.”

She bites her lip, considering my words. “All right,” she finally agrees. “I’ll think about it.”

As we sit there in companionable silence, I feel the weight of my father’s words from earlier. He doesn’t know Quinn, doesn’t know how amazing she is. But I do. And as much as I try to resist, I can feel myself being pulled deeper into her orbit.

Our worlds may differ, but it’s becoming increasingly clear that the line between us is growing thinner by the day. And I’m not sure I want to maintain that divide.

Silent Heat

Quinn

Afterfinishingmymorningyoga session, I feel refreshed and energized. The sun is just beginning to rise, casting a warm golden light throughout my room. I take a deep breath, savoring the peace and quiet before the day starts. Dressed in my form-fitting yoga leggings and a tank top, I head downstairs to prepare breakfast for Paige.

As I walk down the stairs, I’m lost in thoughts of the day ahead, mentally running through the list of tasks I need to complete. I reach the first floor and round the corner.

“Ahh!” I cry out as I hit a wall of muscle.

I gasp as I feel the heat of his bare skin against mine. He’s shirtless, wearing only a pair of running shorts, and his chiseled muscles are on full display. I try not to stare, but it’s impossible to ignore how his chest rises and falls with each breath. The light dusting of hair traveling from his navel to below his waistband sends a jolt of longing to my core.

“Quinn,” he says, his voice low and husky, “I didn’t expect you to be up so early.”

My cheeks flush with embarrassment as I step back, trying to put some distance between us. “I was just about to make breakfast for Paige,” I stammer, struggling to maintain eye contact.

“You look…” he swallows hard as his eyes move over my body, leaving trails of fire in their wake. “You look good.” He clears his throat and looks away. “I was just heading out for a run.”

I admire the way his muscles ripple with each movement. Seeing him is intoxicating, and I imagine what it would be like to run my fingers over his toned body.

“Enjoy your run,” I say. “I’ll have breakfast ready when you get back.”

“Thank you,” he replies, his eyes meeting mine with a spark of something I can’t quite identify.

As he turns to leave, I watch him go, my heart pounding in my chest. The charged energy between us is undeniable, and I wonder what it would be like to cross that line.

Shaking off the intrusive thoughts, I make my way into the kitchen and begin preparing breakfast. As I crack eggs and fry bacon, I try to focus on the task at hand, but my mind keeps drifting back to when our bodies collided.

I need to maintain a professional relationship with Ezra, but the temptation to explore this uncharted territory is overwhelming.

“Girl,” I say as I take a large gulp of orange juice, “get a hold of yourself. You’ve seen sexy men before.”

As I softly nibble on my lip, my heart knows no one can hold a candle to Ezra. But I must fight the urge to chase after him. He is a man of means, with years of life experience that I could never match. Our worlds are too different. Yet, I find myself hopelessly drawn to him, like a moth to a flame, unable to resist our irresistible attraction.

It’s been a week since Ezra invited me to his family dinner, and I’m still debating whether or not I should accept. On the one hand, I’m intrigued by the prospect of meeting his family and learning more about him. On the other hand, I’m scared to enter their world. My experience with my ex showed me how wealthy people can treat those who do not share their level of wealth and status. Plus, I already know that once Paige warms up to the other kids, she’ll be fine and I’ll be stuck spending time with the adults there.

I walk into the living room to find Paige sprawled on the couch, eyes glued to the television screen as cartoon characters sing and dance.

“Paige,” I call out, my voice firm yet gentle. “It’s time for you to do your homework.”

She groans in protest, her face falling into an expression of frustration. “Do I have to?”

“Yes,” I say, trying not to laugh at her theatrics. “Otherwise, you won’t finish your projects by the deadline.”

Reluctantly, she shuffles towards the dining table and plops down into a chair with a sigh. She pulls out her notebook and pencil, ready to begin. I smile and settle into the chair across from her, helping her as she works on her assignments.

Just then, I hear the sound of footsteps approaching. Ezra walks into the room.

My heart skips a beat. His commanding presence fills the space. He’s dressed in a crisp button-down shirt and tailored slacks, his clean-cut hair neatly combed back from his forehead. He has an undeniable aura of strength and power.
