I felt a wave of pain wash over me, but I pushed it aside and focused on my mother’s well-being. “Mum, where are you now?” I asked. “Who’s with you?”

“I’m at the hospital,” she said, her voice trembling. “Fleur is here with me. Anne is with Gabriella.”

I let out a small sigh of relief that she wasn’t alone. “Make sure at least one of them stays with you until I get there, okay?” I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

“Get here?” she asked, sounding surprised.

“Yes, I’m coming home,” I said firmly. “You don’t have to worry about anything. I’ll make arrangements.”

“Okay,” she said, before the sound of some commotion could be heard in the background.

“I have to go now,” she said quickly. “You’re really coming home?”

“Yes, I’ll be there as soon as I can,” I assured her, before the call ended.

I sat there in silence, my mind grappling, knowing that my life would never be the same again. The numbness I felt would eventually wear off, but for now, I was grateful for it, as it allowed me to focus on what needed to be done for my family.

“Spencer?” London’s soft voice interrupted my thoughts as she placed a comforting hand on my arm. “What happened?”

“My father died,” I replied, my voice heavy with a weight I had never felt before.

“Oh, no,” she said, wrapping her arms around me in a warm embrace. “I’m so sorry.”

“Thank you,” I said, grateful for her support.

“What can I do?” she asked, her voice filled with concern.

I appreciated she didn’t ask if I was okay, as there was nothing anyone could do to change what had happened. But her presence was soothing, and I leaned into her, grateful for the comfort she provided.

“I have to go back to England,” I said, my mind racing with the next steps I needed to take.

“Of course,” she said without hesitation. “Do you need me to do anything?”

Before I could think it through, I blurted out, “Come with me.” I immediately opened my mouth to retract my offer, but to my surprise, she agreed.

Relief flooded through me, and I closed my eyes. It was a lot to ask of her, especially after her injury, but I didn’t have the strength to do this alone. I needed her with me, more than I ever thought possible.

“Thank you,” I said, taking a deep breath. “Are you sure you’ll be okay with your ankle?” I asked, concerned for her well-being.

London rolled her eyes, reassuring me. “I’ll be fine. I can travel. I just can’t stand on a stage for hours.” She kissed my cheek and asked, “What do we do next?”

I wanted to stay in her embrace and forget about everything else, but I knew plans had to be made. “I have to call Stan,” I said, trying to pull myself together. “Make arrangements to leave.”

“You’re right,” she said, getting up from the bed. “I need to make a few calls, too.” She hesitated for a moment, her embrace tightening as if she could sense my reluctance to let go. Then she kissed my forehead and got dressed.

I quickly put on my pants and retrieved my phone from my pocket. It took two calls before Stan answered, but his voice was concerned rather than angry, despite the late hour.

“Spencer? Is everything all right?” he asked, his tone filled with worry.

“My father passed away,” I replied, the reality of the situation still hitting me.

“My condolences,” he said, his words formal, but the sentiment genuine.

“Thank you,” I said, feeling a sliver of pain.

“I’m assuming you’re calling because you’re going home,” Stan said.

“I am,” I confirmed, glancing at London. “And London’s coming with me.”
