“I think you’ve underestimated us,” Spencer said confidently.

“I’ll fight you in court for what my son left you,” Opal threatened. “And you won’t have the money to fight back.”

“But I do,” I interjected, catching their attention.

“You don’t need to-“ Spencer started, but I cut him off.

“If I’m your family, then you’re mine,” I stated, looking into Spencer’s eyes. “And I won’t let anyone try to come between us.”

Opal shook her head. “You have no idea what-“

“London’s a multi-millionaire,” Spencer informed.

Eloise and Opal both looked stunned as they gazed at me.

I shrugged nonchalantly. “I have a trust fund. I don’t overspend, and I make excellent investments.”

I had a bit more than Spencer was aware of, but I felt that disclosure might be too much for Opal to believe.

And right now, there was only one thing I wanted from that woman. “Now, this is my home, and you’ve said what you came to say,” I said firmly. “If you don’t plan to be a part of this family, it’s time for you to leave.”

No one had ever spoken to Opal like this before, judging by the expressions on everyone’s faces.

“Excuse me?” Opal finally managed to say.

“It’s time for you to go, Er, um…orsod off,as you English like to say.” I plastered a sugar-sweet smile on my face. “In case you don’t leave, I’ll call building security and have them call the police. I won’t hesitate to have you removed for trespassing and will make sure the press gets pictures, too.”

Eloise made a sound that could’ve been a laugh, a cough, or just a general noise of surprise.

“And one more thing.” I let go of Spencer’s hand and took a step towards Opal. “If you come after my family or anyone I love, I’ll use every penny and connection I have to make sure you regret it. Trust me, you don’t want to know the extent of my reach.” I gestured toward the exit. “Now, the door is over there.”

Opal glared at me for a moment longer, as if trying to come up with a retort, but she finally spun on her heels and left the apartment without another word. As her footsteps faded away down the hall, I let out a deep breath that I didn’t even realize I was holding. My hands were shaking with adrenaline, and my heart was pounding so hard that I could hear it in my ears. Despite feeling victorious, I couldn’t shake the unease that came with standing up to someone like Opal.

FIFTY

SPENCER

Grandmother had walkedout without another word, leaving my mother and I both shocked. When London turned to us, her cheeks were pink, but I wasn’t sure if it was from embarrassment or the fading anger.

“What?” London asked.

I raised an eyebrow. “I’ve never seen my grandmother listen to anyone. Ever.”

London shrugged. “I think I caught her off guard, that’s all.”

“You should be proud,” my mother said. “You handled yourself beautifully.”

“Thanks,” London said, glancing at me with a questioning look.

I didn’t have an answer for her, but I was still in awe of how she stood up to my grandmother.

“I’m sorry, London.” My mom’s voice was sincere. “I should have been better. I owe you an apology. Both of you.”

“Mom, you don’t have to–” I started.

“I do, Spencer,” she interrupted. “I should have respected your choices. All of them.”

She turned back to London. “From the moment I met you, I should have told you that my son was lucky to have you in his life. You’re an exceptional young woman and I’m honored to have you in my family.”
