“Hobo and I sometimes sit on the boat for an hour without talking,” Eagle shared the other day. “What’s there to say between two old friends? But I’m still glad he’s nearby.”

That’s how I am with Fiona. Now, I enjoy the same comfort with Eagle. The puzzle is nearly finished when Fiona wants to retire to bed.

I help her get tucked in, noticing earlier how she was limping.

“You overdid it today,” I whisper as she snuggles under her heavy burgundy blanket.

“I liked having Eagle here. His friends are nice, but I can understand why they intimidate Father.”

“This is the life we can have together one day.”

Fiona opens her eyes, seeming ready to disagree. I wait for her to speak up, but she only smiles. Closing her eyes, she pulls the blanket up higher.

“Eagle can visit here whenever he wants. You’ll have two homes before you build your forever one.”

Her words bring tears to my eyes. I feel my future forming with Eagle, Clementine, Fiona, and his club family.

Joining Eagle in the family room, I put on a funny show and lean into his embrace.

“We have the house to ourselves.”

“How loud can we get?”

“Fiona’s sound machine is playing. Olive is on the other end of the hall. So pretty loud.”

Eagle smirks and wraps me in his arms. “I realize I viewed this house much like I did the upstairs at my childhood place. I felt deprived by not coming here. As if I weren’t good enough. Today fixed a lot of the inner bitchiness I’ve been feeling.”

“Soon, we’ll share a space. No more bouncing around.”

“Fiona seemed cool with me being here.”

“Yes, she adores you.”

A grinning Eagle kisses me. As I straddle his lap, we share the relaxed familiarity that comes from spending more time with each other. There’s less second-guessing, fewer barriers, and more honesty.
