“I kinda want to pack up and go back,” Eagle admits as we sit in our living room during Clementine’s night feeding.

“Should we?”

Frowning, Eagle shakes his head. “I thought you’d be the voice of reason.”

“I want to be weak and irresponsible. That means you’re the voice of reason tonight.”

Eagle smiles and nods. “We should give it a week or two. If we don’t like it, we’ll move back to the Pigsty and have this place bulldozed.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

Of course, we don’t knock down our home. After those first few nights, we get the hang of the big, quiet place. That weekend, we throw a housewarming party with barbecue, beer, and a bounce house for the little ones.

I’m discussing party plans with the girls in my big, open kitchen when I spot Hobo lingering nearby. I sense he wants to join us, so I make prolonged eye contact until he catches the hint and approaches.

“You’re throwing a baby shower, huh?”

“Are you looking to be invited?” Wynonna asks him.

Hobo rubs his jaw and gives her a grumpy frown. “I heard you talking about cupcakes.”

“That’s the plan. Did you want to come?”

“More like I wanted to suggest you order the cupcakes from XYZ Coffee.”

“No, no,” Wynonna insists. “The Crockpot has the best cupcakes. I’ve never even heard of that other place.”

Hobo steps closer, blocking my view of Wynonna. “I’m asking you to order them from this place. The owner is a nice lady who got screwed over by a shady realtor.”

Wynonna snorts and glances at Callie. “Was it you, witch?”

“No, it was that new guy,” Hobo says, holding my gaze. “The lady ended up leasing a little place on Howling Prairie Road. It’s a terrible spot, and she could use the business. The cupcakes are good there.”

“This is an important party,” Wynonna says, dodging Hobo to stand between us. “That whole road is trashy. Your lady friend was a dumbass for picking it.”

Hobo shoots a dark frown at Wynonna before his blue eyes focus on my face. He stares deeply as if he’s hoping to imprint something on my brain.

“This lady is new to town and already in over her head. Not so long ago, you were new to McMurdo Valley. I’d think you’d want to do her a favor and order many cupcakes.”

“Of course,” I say, catching on. “I’ll be sure to order from XYZ Coffee. Should I tell the owner that you sent me?”

The other women realize what I do, and Wynonna stops fussing over the cupcakes.

“Oh, Hobo, it’s real sweet of you to help out a duped elderly lady,” she says and pokes at his gut. “You boys sure are getting sappy in your old age.”

Hobo stares at her until she laughs, forcing him to walk away.

Wynonna grins at the rest of us. “Goose said the other day how the domino effect had stopped since Irina. But it might be back. Can’t wait until we meet the cupcake lady.”

Looking at my friends, I consider how most of us fell in love with our biker in the last year and a half. Outside on the porch, our men barbecue while supervising the kids. They’re a handsome bunch. My gaze lands on Eagle, who seems brighter and better than the rest.

I don’t know anything about the cupcake lady. Yet, in my mind, there’s nothing luckier in McMurdo Valley than gaining the interest of one of the Steel Berserkers.
