Dinner is delicious, even if the company is terrible. Todd Rogers doesn’t say anything to Fiona or me. All through the meal, Jimbo glares daggers in my direction. Meanwhile, Ashley flicks roasted carrots at Fiona. Through it all, Larry fills the silence with stories about battling increasingly outlandish opponents.

I suspect he normally receives pushback from his brothers. With one dead and the other busy glaring at me, Larry can keep on babbling for an uninterrupted hour.

Fiona is excellent at goofing around in her head when she’s bored. She eats half her meal, ignores when Ashley orders her to finish it, and then spends the final forty minutes stroking Gatsby’s head.

Like his daughter, Todd acts oblivious toward everyone. I keep waiting for him to tell Larry to shut up or say something about Ashley’s childish behavior. He might as well be a ghost for how little he participates.

Throughout dinner, my mind remains on Eagle. Yet, the longer Larry drones on, the more I realize how my moment with the sexy biker has passed. He knows I work for this terrible family. I haven’t seen him in weeks. I never got his number to message him. I just disappeared.

In my heart, I hope I can simply return and pick up where we left off. Eagle doesn’t need to know about the baby until I’m certain the pregnancy will stick. Why can’t we embrace our sexy fun free of outside world pressures?

Except underneath my lustful hopes, I imagine a scenario where my return to the Pigsty is met with hostility. I work for the club’s enemy. Marky attacked women connected to the Steel Berserkers’ president and vice president. I might not understand the exact details or how a motorcycle club works. However, I’m certain Eagle will view me with unease after learning who pays my salary.

“You’re old,” Ashley states after dinner is over. She follows me outside where I guide Fiona back to the Tudor. “You’re a dried-up old bitch paid to take care of a brain-damaged dipshit.”

“And you’re my employer’s girlfriend,” I reply as Fiona stands quietly at my side. “We’re aware of each other’s value.”

“I’m more than his girlfriend, you stupid twat.”

“So was my mother,” Fiona says and gestures for Gatsby to start moving. “No one is irreplaceable.”

Ashley moves to shove Fiona. I jump in the way and nearly end up on my ass. Regaining my balance, I stare in to the gold digger’s blue eyes and exhale sharply.

“Todd just lost his son. Now, you want to hurt his daughter. You forget yourself, Ashley.”

“Yeah!” Jimbo barks, startling both of us.

With her eyes closed, Fiona keeps shuffling away from the mansion. I think to tell her how she’s going the wrong direction. Except I’m more worried about playing buffer between these two monsters and her.

Jimbo steps out from the mansion’s side door and lands his raging gaze on Ashley.

“Know your place, bitch, or I’ll remind you of it.”

Ashley doesn’t flinch at his tone. Snarling, she insists, “Don’t speak to me that way.”

“You’re just the latest whore. Eventually, I won’t remember your name any better than I do the other discarded cunts.”

Ashley and Jimbo glare at each other. I’m surprised she doesn’t back down when he’s got a good foot on her. I imagine him smashing her beautiful young body into a busted mess.

Sensing I’m no longer necessary, I hurry after Fiona who is headed toward the front of the property rather than the Tudor.

“I’m doing it by myself,” she explains with her eyes closed and a proud smile on her lovely face. “Gatsby and I figured it out.”

“Of course,” I reply, sharing her grin. “Just let me tie your shoe.”

I turn her slightly and then pretend to fix her shoe. Once I’m done, she walks straight ahead, now facing the correct direction.

As soon as we arrive inside the house, Fiona smiles brightly. “I wasn’t afraid.”

“You were so brave.”

“I want you to see Eagle. I bet he thought you looked beautiful in your black dress at the funeral.”

I remember that day after she took all her medicine and before she turned into a lump. Fiona very carefully forced her eyes open and looked at me in my dress. She had been so excited for me to see Eagle.

Fiona is the same way when I prepare to visit him on Friday. Her excitement infects me, lessening the sting of my fears. I grow even more psyched when one of Todd’s bodyguards stops by to let me know that I can drive myself into town.

“If you’re not back by four a.m.,” he adds, giving me a little snarl, “I’ve been tasked to track you down.”
