I look at him and wipe my eyes. Eagle watches me like I’m a mystery he can’t possibly solve.

“Imagine if one of your club brothers wanted everything you have but couldn’t go out and get it. Wouldn’t you feel guilty?”

“Why can’t she have those things? I don’t understand what’s wrong with her. You said she fell, and her brain is messed up. But then, she sounds like she’s normal. I don’t understand.”

“Fiona lost a lot of knowledge when she was hurt. Memories and education were stripped away. Plus, she’s always been locked inside a house. Her mother was nuts. Her father didn’t care. She is a child and a woman wrapped into one package. A part of her wants to go out with me and see the world. Yet, she’s afraid, and I don’t think she can handle the stress. Her world is small and safe. If it got bigger, Fiona might be destroyed.”

Wiping my cheeks, I exhale deeply. “That’s why I feel guilty. I was going to spend the rest of my life in her little world, so she wouldn’t be alone. We’d have each other. But now, I need you, and you aren’t capable of fitting in our little world. You’re this powerful, wild man who rides motorcycles and gets into fights. I find your world fascinating. I want to know everything. Except to learn your secrets, I must leave Fiona behind.”

Eagle startles me by slamming his hands flat on the steering wheel. His nostrils flare, his body is rigid, and his gaze glares at the road.

“Why is life such a fucking drag? I see people like Todd Rogers doing whatever the fuck he wants and never suffering any payback. But good people get shit on. I fucking hate it.”

I watch him, unsure how to deal with his temper. Eagle grunts and exhales loudly like a balloon deflating.

“You and I will make things work,” he says and drops back into the seat. “We’ll peel away our layers and find out about each other. I know it’ll be magic. I deserve to have you. I know you deserve to have everything. And if Fiona is what you need to be happy, I’m going to fit her into our life together.”

“Just like that?”

“No, Irina,” he mutters and flashes a frown at me. “It’s going to be hard, and we might not do things right the first time. But I’m in love with you, and I’m never giving you up. If I have to share you with Fiona, I’ll do it. If I need to deal with you living on that old fucker’s property, I’ll do it. But the goal is to have you with me all the time. You get that, right?”

“It’s our first date,” I say as my head repeats his declaration of love. “You don’t need to promise everything. Just be patient with me as I learn to step away from Fiona. I want to give you my complete focus when we’re together. I’m just not there yet.”

“I plan to fix things for you.”

“I don’t need a magic genie. I just want you to feel what I do, and you just told me that you do.”

Eagle allows a little grin. “I know you’re mine. That’s why I’m addicted. It’s not about fucking. I just feel happier when you’re with me.”

Exhaling the last of my bad mood, I meet his lips. Eagle consumes me. I can’t think of anything beyond his hot body leaning over me. I wrap my arms around his shoulders, nearly tugging him into the passenger seat.

Eagle chuckles at the awkwardness of our position before coming back for another quick kiss. As he slowly leans away from me, his hypnotic eyes glow.

“I get to keep you with me all night,” he murmurs and flashes a satisfied grin. “First, though, let’s check out a movie and make out at a restaurant.”

Smiling at his relaxed demeanor, I ask, “We’ll make out at the movie, too, won’t we?”

“Oh, yeah,” he says and pulls the SUV back onto the road.

Exhibiting the ease of a man showing off his hometown, Eagle takes charge of our evening.

I glance at my phone to find a message from Olive with a short video of Fiona cuddled with Gatsby on the floor. They look relaxed. Mozart plays quietly. Fiona hums along. With life calm back at the guesthouse, I choose to focus on the sexy man hoping to prove his heart right.
