“Both. I like when you lavish money on me in public,” I tell him before enjoying his lips once more.

Eagle drags the kiss out until I’m thinking about climbing into the back seat. Instead, he frees my lips and offers a sad smile.

“You best get inside where it’s warm. Message me in the next hour, so I know everything’s still cool with Fiona and the rest of the Rogers family.”

Hearing his worry inspires my own panic. I suddenly wonder about the single text from Fiona from this morning. She just said she was fine.

I’m forced to leave Eagle and return to the minefield inside this estate. The cold wraps around me as I ride from the security building to the guesthouse. I lose all my confidence from the last day with Eagle. His presence and world feel so far away by the time I enter the guesthouse to find Olive reading in the family room alone.

“Where’s Fiona?”

“In bed.”

“Did everything go okay?”

“Yes, but she wasn’t hungry this morning. I brought her English muffins. She only ate half.”

Once out of my jacket, I don’t waste time taking my bag upstairs. I head to Fiona’s room, where she listens to classical music. I crawl into bed next to her.

“Are you okay?” I ask when she doesn’t react.

“I missed you last night.”

“I missed you, too.”

“Not like I missed you,” she mumbles, wearing a pout. “You had Eagle. I had a stranger.”

“Well, Eagle’s a stranger.”

Fiona opens her eyes a bit and frowns at me. “It’s difficult for me to be without you. I’m afraid of being in charge.”

“Did Olive do a bad job?”

“No. She remembered everything, but she isn’t my friend or family. When I got scared, she didn’t notice like you would have.”

“What scared you?”

“I feel like someone is lurking outside. I think I’m being watched.”

“The house has security. If someone were prowling around, the hired guns would notice.”

“Maybe, but would they care?”

Stroking Fiona’s face, I feel her relaxing. “I’m sorry you were afraid. Why didn’t you say anything in the messages?”

“I wanted you to have fun with Eagle. Did you?”

“Yes.”

Wiggling closer until I can wrap my arms around her, Fiona asks, “Will you tell me about your date?”

For the next hour, I describe everything from the movie to this morning’s omelet. I skip the parts when I discussed her with Eagle. The more I share, the better her mood. By the time we leave the bedroom for lunch, Fiona is relaxed.

“I’m ready to spend the night without you again,” she says as we sit together in the kitchen.

Thinking of Eagle’s expression when we parted earlier, I know he’ll be relieved to plan our next date. His quick text response proves as much.

Unfortunately, my date night with a Steel Berserkers member likely triggers the demand for Fiona and me to join the Rogers family again for dinner. Olive is very deliberately not mentioned in the invitation.
