I felt like I was literally drooling by that point. Eagle looked around and frowned like maybe someone was putting him on. Part of me worried he viewed my interest as a joke.Hey, look at this thirty-five-year-old woman thinking she’d seduce the pants off a gorgeous biker!

“Do you live in McMurdo Valley?” Eagle asked, suspicious at that point.

“Yes. I moved here two weeks ago.”

Watching me with wary eyes, Eagle nodded. He checked me out again as if searching for a wire. Did he think I was a cop? Or a snitch sent by an enemy? That last one made me nervous about sharing who paid my salary.

“I saw you in town,” I blurted out when he stepped back like he couldn’t trust me. “You were talking to a woman on the street. She had two boys with her. The waitress said you were a biker.”

Leaning closer, Eagle narrowed his eyes and asked in a rough voice, “Are you stalking me?”

Unable to stop myself, I admitted, “Not full-time, but like as a hobby, yes.”

Eagle surprised me by chuckling and shaking his head. “You’re not for real.”

I should have just smiled and kept my big mouth shut. Instead, my heart broke at how he dismissed me.

Noticing my downfallen expression, Eagle lost his grin. “What’s your name?”

“Irina.”

“And you saw me on the street?”

Nodding, I felt dreary after hanging all my hopes on this one stranger. Now, my heart was in free fall. Why would I think he’d find me half as fascinating as I did him?

“How did you know that woman wasn’t my girlfriend or some shit?”

“The waitress said it was your sister.”

Eagle’s handsome face turned fearsome. “People shouldn’t talk about my shit.”

Stepping back, I felt the kind of fear I did when I realized Jimbo Rogers was a monster.

“I’m sorry,” I mumbled, so lightheaded that I nearly dropped my drink. “I shouldn’t have come here.”

“Why are you here?”

“I wanted to meet you.”

“Why?”

I didn’t answer, too embarrassed by the truth. Eagle understood my silence and looked me over again.

“You’re for real?”

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“You’re here to hang out with me. This isn’t some fucking trick or joke or whatever, right?”

“Why would I be a trick?”

“My people like to fuck with me,” Eagle grumbled before rubbing the back of his neck. “We also have enemies.”

Perhaps the booze made me insane, but I got irritated by his attitude and demanded, “Did you give that teenager the third degree?”

Eagle nearly smiled at my irritated words. “No, but she’s a local chick looking to party.”

“Why can’t I be here to party?”
