“I dig the shade,” she says and squats down next to the dog. “Is he an attack dog?”

“No, he’s her guide dog.”

“He’s pretty big. Could he throw down?”

“I assume if he had to. He is a dog, after all.”

“So is Havana and that little ball of fluff can’t fight for shit.”

We all look at the small animal using Yazmin’s foot as a pillow.

“Where’s the little dog?” Fiona asks and opens her eyes a crack. “Where do I look?”

I direct her to where Havana naps. Fiona smiles before glancing at Gatsby. She strokes her dog’s head and falls silent. I notice she hasn’t finished the crab cake.

“Are you feeling okay?”

“I’m sleepy,” she says and cups my face. “Can I talk to Eagle alone before I take a nap?”

“Talk about what?”

“It’s a secret.”

I glance at Eagle eavesdropping. Actually, a dozen people are listening in, but I only see him.

“He can lean down to hear you.”

“No, I want to speak in private.”

My heart races at what she’s planning. “I don’t know.”

“It’s fine,” Eagle says, grumpy over how I don’t trust him. “We’ll go to the pool room where it’s quiet.”

“I can’t swim,” Fiona says immediately.

“Then, if I fall in and start drowning, you should scream for help,” Eagle replies and picks her up. “We’ll be back.”

Fiona looks horrified at being in his arms. If I weren’t so terrified about what she wants to tell him, I might laugh at her shocked expression. Gatsby follows them as they disappear down the hallway.

I’m suddenly alone with Wynonna and her girl gang. The brunette takes my hand and tsk-tsks unimpressed.

“Your nails are ragged, honey. You need to come with us to the salon tomorrow.”

The other women smile softly while Wynonna nods in front of my face until I mimic her. Just like that I’ve agreed to go out with a group of women who know a secret I’m too terrified to tell the baby’s father. Of course, Fiona might be about to blab anyway.

No matter what triggers my exhaustion, I give up on putting on a brave front and just plop down in the chair. When Walla Walla hands me a cocktail, Wynonna shakes her head and asks for something less boozy.

“Oh, I get it,” he says and winks.

And just like that, my secret is on borrowed time.
