OANA, AKA DRAMA WHORE BATTLES, PART TWO

Despite the preppingIke and I did at breakfast, I had no idea what to expect when I arrived at the homestead.

I’ve thought about this place for a long time, far longer than I’d known about Ike Mooney. The people who lived here are the opposite of the people from my community.

At the homestead, they’re free and wild. The only thing they share in common with the Trinity Church people is their loyalty to each other.

Of course, I’ve completely burned my bridges with my family. That was always bound to happen, whether I ran off with Ike, lived as a hermit in the woods, or married Jarin. I’d always end up angering them, so I can’t feel too bad about how things shook out.

I’m far more nervous about upsetting the homestead people. They already don’t like me. If I make a bad impression today, I’ll never get a do-over.

All my prep work doesn’t come in handy once I’m pulled away from Ike’s side. Our plan was to stick together, refusing to let them gang up on us. Now, he’s walking off with his mother, father, and sister.

I’m on the porch of a stranger’s house with two strangers and another one racing toward me.

“I’m in charge of your happiness!” declares the bubbly blonde as she steps back on the porch.

“You’re Tuesday.”

“Yes,” she says and strokes my head. “I’m nice. Not at all naughty.”

The other two women roll their eyes while Tuesday pets me.

“Where’s Ike going?”

“He needs to convince his parents to stop shitting bricks about his love life. Let’s go inside and relax while he works his magic.”

Roxie opens the front door and gestures for me to enter. “I know these people can seem like a bit much. When I met them, I wasn’t sure if they were on drugs or what. Turns out they’re simply high on life.”

I enter the handsomely decorated house as Alexis and Tuesday bring up the rear. Looking around, I ask, “Who lives here?”

“My cousin Felix and his family, but only part-time and not right now. He’s staying away until my dream house is built,” Tuesday explains and takes my hand. “Soon, you’ll have a dream house on the homestead. We’ll borrow sugar and trade gossip about other people.”

“I’m getting a dream house, too,” Alexis says and settles into a dark leather chair before fanning herself. “The heat has stolen my joy.”

“Poor ginger-in-law,” Tuesday coos before tugging me closer. “You grew up in that church.”

“You sang ‘WAP’ at us.”

“Yes, you’re welcome,” Tuesday replies, slowing her words as if I’m having trouble following.

“You seemed very confident.”
