Journey warns her sister, “My elbow will not feel good against your nose.”

“I’m just helping,” Justice says and winks at me for some reason.

Journey gives her sister a dirty look before focusing all her irritation on me.

“This is your chance to be honest without Ike present. I’m willing to help you if you fess up now, but if you drag this out and they prove you’re lying, I will show you no mercy. Get it?”

Justice’s eyes widen, and she looks concerned for my safety.

“How old are you?” Journey asks me.

“I just turned nineteen. That’s why my parents were forcing me to marry Jarin. They hoped he’d marry Anouk, but he claimed she was too weird. Besides, he wanted a blonde wife.”

When Journey stares hard at me, I work up the courage to hold her gaze.

“They’ve got Ike at the sheriff’s office. They want to examine you. They’ve sent a fricking child services worker here. Can you prove your age?”

“I don’t have any paperwork.”

Sighing, Journey says, “Well, no more hiding. You need to deal with the deputies, so Ike can come home.”

“I’ll do whatever necessary to help him.”

Journey offers me a soft smile. “You love my boy.”

“More than anything in the world.”

“Then, let’s go fix this crap.”

No longer nervous, I instantly follow Journey. We have a plan, even if I’m unsure what it is. I do know Journey is the kind of no-nonsense woman I want to become.

Today will be when I prove my mettle.

IKE, AKA BABBLING MAN

Ican’t say I’m particularlysurprised to be in the back of a sheriff’s SUV. I always assumed I’d get arrested eventually. I like to speed. I cut off people a lot. I’m not good at apologizing. So, at the very least, a road rage incident was in my future.
